💛 FULLY BOOKED! | Pelvic Floor Awareness & Well-Being

What a lovely feeling to share, our Pelvic Floor Awareness & Well-Being workshop is now FULL! 🌿

Thank you to everyone who has booked a place. Louise from @hug_pelvic_physio and I are really looking forward to bringing you this afternoon of learning, gentle movement and exploration.

Pelvic floor wellbeing is about so much more than strengthening exercises. It includes bladder and bowel function, coordination, relaxation and understanding how this often-overlooked part of our body works in relationship with the rest of us.

This is a topic close to my heart. Living with a bowel condition has taught me just how much pelvic health can influence our everyday lives, and how valuable the right support can be.

I'm so pleased to see this interest in a broader conversation about pelvic floor wellbeing, and grateful to everyone who is helping us create space for it within our community. 💛

Saturday 24 October | Shelley Anglican Parish Hall

Keep an eye out for future workshops and opportunities to explore pelvic health, movement and wellbeing with us.

Did you know I have a pelvic health store too? @pelvic_health_store

I kept finding that when I recommended products to my patients to support the work we were doing in clinic, I couldn’t quite find what I was looking for.

So… I created them myself.

Now when I recommend at home exercises or strategies to support someone’s treatment, I can also recommend the exact product I know will work alongside what we’re doing in clinic.

Everything in the store has been chosen or created with pelvic health in mind. It’s practical, purposeful and designed to support you beyond your appointment. by @hug_pelvic_physio

Suddenly planning your whole day around where the nearest toilet is?

If you’re going through perimenopause and you’ve noticed you’re peeing more often, getting stronger urges or waking up during the night to go, you’re definitely not alone.

Hormonal changes can affect your bladder, urethra and pelvic floor, which can contribute to new or worsening bladder symptoms.

But bladder changes aren’t something you just have to accept because you’re getting older.

There are lots of reasons you might be experiencing these symptoms, and a pelvic health physio can help work out what’s actually going on and what your body needs.

If your bladder has suddenly become a little more demanding, it’s worth getting it checked.

October is Menopause Awareness Month 🤍

It’s an opportunity to talk a little more openly about the changes that can happen during perimenopause and menopause. Including the ones we don’t always talk about, like bladder symptoms, pelvic pain and changes with sex.

And first things first: perimenopause and menopause aren’t the same thing.

Perimenopause is the transition towards menopause, when hormone levels fluctuate and you may start noticing changes to your periods, sleep, mood, bladder, pelvic health and more.

Menopause is officially reached once you’ve gone 12 consecutive months without a period.

We’ll be talking more about menopause and pelvic health throughout the month, because understanding what’s happening in your body can make it a whole lot easier to know when to seek support.

If you’re experiencing symptoms that are affecting your day to day life, a pelvic health physio can help. Book via the link in bio.

💛 A personal story ~ Pelvic Floor Wellbeing

Living with a bowel condition has taught me that pelvic health can have a much bigger impact on everyday life than we might realise.

Seeing a pelvic floor physiotherapist was instrumental in my own wellbeing journey. It helped me better understand my body and gave me more confidence to enjoy longer walks and hikes, like this stretch of the Cape to Cape Track.

For me, that was life-changing.

🌿 When we hear the words pelvic floor, many of us immediately think about strengthening exercises. But pelvic floor wellbeing is about so much more, including bladder and bowel function, coordination, relaxation and the ability to respond to what our body needs.

This is why I'm so looking forward to offering our Pelvic Floor Awareness & Well-Being workshop alongside @hug_pelvic_physio Pelvic Hug Physiotherapy.

Combining Louise's clinical expertise with gentle, yoga-based movement, we'll explore this often-overlooked part of the body from a broader perspective.

We talk about pelvic pain a lot more when it affects women, but men experience it too.

In fact, around 1 in 12 men experience pelvic pain.

And it can show up in ways you might not immediately connect to your pelvic health. Like pain when sitting, discomfort in the pelvis or perineum, urinary symptoms, pain with sex or ongoing aches that just don’t seem to go away.

If you’ve been experiencing ongoing pelvic pain and aren’t sure where to start, a pelvic health physio can help you work out what might be contributing to it and what support is available.

Because yes, men have pelvic floors too.

We’re pretty good at getting used to things our bodies are trying to tell us 👀

A little leak when you sneeze. Pain with sex. Needing to wee far too often. Straining to poo. That feeling of pelvic heaviness. Avoiding the activities you love because of your annoying symptoms.

You might have been told it’s common but that doesn’t mean it’s “normal”, which means you DON’T have to put up with it.

If something is affecting your comfort, confidence or everyday life, it’s worth talking about. You don’t need to wait until it gets worse, and you don’t need to know what’s wrong before booking an appointment. by @hug_pelvic_physio

Your pelvic floor needs to do more than just squeeze. A healthy pelvic floor should be able to contract, lift, and relax.

If you find it difficult to let your pelvic floor relax, struggle to start or finish a wee, or feel like you can’t completely empty your bladder, it might be worth getting it checked.

You can’t predict exactly how your birth will unfold but you can go into it feeling informed, prepared and equipped with tools 🤍

That’s exactly what a pelvic physio can help you achieve.

Learning about things like pelvic floor relaxation, breathing, birth positions and perineal massage can help you feel more confident in what your body may experience and give you practical strategies to draw on along the way. by @hug_pelvic_physio

A pelvic floor that’s doing too much can cause more symptoms than you might expect.

Bladder, bowel, joint and vulval symptoms can all be associated with pelvic floor tension and sometimes what feels like a pelvic floor that needs strengthening actually needs to learn how to relax.

If any of these signs sound familiar, it’s worth getting assessed rather than trying to work it out yourself. by @hug_pelvic_physio

When we talk about pelvic floor health, it’s not simply about whether your muscles are “strong” or “weak”.

Your pelvic floor needs to be able to switch on when you need it to, and relax when you don’t 🤍

An underactive pelvic floor and an overactive pelvic floor can cause very different symptoms (although sometimes the signs can overlap).

That’s why more pelvic floor exercises aren’t always the answer. The right approach depends on what your muscles are actually doing.

If something doesn’t feel quite right, a pelvic health assessment can help you understand what’s going on and what your body needs. by @hug_pelvic_physio
