Between light and shadow, emotion unfolds.

In The Killing Moon, Hugh O'Conor's sensitivity to light and atmosphere comes to the fore. His photography is rooted in observation rather than spectacle, creating images that feel deeply intimate while resisting easy interpretation. Each composition invites a lingering gaze, revealing emotion through restraint rather than narrative.

Drawing on decades of visual storytelling across film and theatre, O'Conor has developed a photographic language that is entirely his own. Working primarily in portraiture and street photography, his images are defined by a cinematic sense of light and an instinctive understanding of mood, often suggesting a story that exists just beyond the frame.

Presented as an archival pigment print on Hahnemühle Photo Rag Pearl, The Killing Moon reflects the timeless quality that defines O'Conor's practice. His photography has been exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy and the Royal Ulster Academy, and his work is held in the permanent collection of the National Gallery of Ireland.

Hugh O’Conor discusses how tone is key.

@hughoconor is a creative engine. Starting his career at nine years old opposite Liam Neeson in Lamb, Hugh won the Youth in Film Award for his role as young Christy Brown in the Oscar-winning My Left Foot, earning praise from Daniel Day-Lewis at the Academy Awards.

Since then, he has appeared in films including Chocolat, The Young Poisoner’s Handbook, and The Stag, and won the Irish Times Theatre Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance as the Fool in King Lear at the Abbey Theatre.

Hugh made his feature directorial debut with Metal Heart, earning the Jim Sheridan Award for Achievement in Irish Film, while his latest television project, Showkids, aired on RTÉ in 2025 as a six-part series.

His photography has been exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy and the National Gallery of Ireland.

In this conversation, Hugh discusses his creative journey through the realms of acting, directing, and the multidisciplinary practice of making art.

I rarely ask strangers to take their photo, as (a) I’m quite shy, (b) it can be invasive + (c) even more embarrassing when they say no 😢

I was sitting waiting for a plane in Dublin Airport in 2013, putting film in my Hasselblad, when I saw this woman sit opposite me. She was on a break from work, and seemed a little intrigued by the camera. I asked if I could take a few shots of her, saying I’d send her them if any came out - and this one did 🎞️

Amazingly, it ended up in the @nationalgalleryofireland as part of their portrait prize exhibition, so we got to see it together. Thank you so much Beckah 📷 ✈️ ❤️ by @hughoconor

Objects of Note, at Róisín Lafferty Gallery

Continuing our series in collaboration with @hedgehogsvsfoxes, this week Róisín introduces Chelsea, Harcourt Street by Hugh O’Conor.

An award-winning actor and filmmaker, O’Conor brings a cinematic sensitivity to his photography. In this work, the composition is shaped through reflection, light and framing, capturing a moment that feels both intimate and quietly observed.

The image holds a subtle tension. The subject is present, yet partially removed, her reflection introducing a layered sense of awareness. Light is soft but intentional, acting as a structural element that defines both mood and space.

For Róisín, the strength of the piece lies in its atmosphere. A photograph that holds space rather than simply occupying it, inviting a slower, more considered way of looking.
