Budapest

Pronounced Booda - Pescht! As we were told many times. And it was the best.

Incredible old buildings, the largest spa in Europe, live music with every meal (except breakfast) ruin bars in the Jewish Quarter, England games with indecipherable commentary and best of all, Dee coming over to celebrate her upcoming 21st birthday and bumping into another inter-railing couple Martha & Silas.

It’s been an amazing nearly 3 weeks away on trains, planes, automobiles and a funicular lift. A lot of highs. A few lows. Some very creaky backs / knees / hips and shoulders but ultimately worth it.

I never thought I’d wear white socks with Birkenstocks so that’s a homage to my father. And eating breakfast at 7am on a bench in Ljubljana train station with my wonderful wife was a great start to this last leg.

But obv now need a proper holiday to get over it 🤓
Happy to bore any of you with more details when we meet up. Or just tell me to shut up. Won’t be the first time!

Slovenia

We’d read quite a bit about Slovenia before the trip and were excited to discover a world of dramatic vistas and caves and lakes and rivers. Which it very much was. Plus an incredible Olympic size pool. But it was full of lovely Slovenian people (who’d a thunk it?!) welcoming and proud of their beautiful country. And speaking perfect English. The only drawback was a lack of a bar showing the England game. So we stopped in with the commentary in the local dialect which made for a stress free game.

Bad Gastein, Austria 🇦🇹

Inter-rail train #3 took us to Austria and a good time in Bad Gastein.

Incredible views and changeable weather made for an atmospheric visit.

It’s a cute, magical town steeped in history and is rumoured to have been the inspiration for Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel, especially the Hotel de l’Europe which is magnificent from a distance but a little frayed close up, much like myself.

There’s a vast outdoor Spa in the centre of town where participants relax in any number of pools, steam rooms and even a fake waterfall. It is strict etiquette to be naked at all times in the sauna which was quite an eye opener for us Brits. Especially on the rooftop where you could literally let it all hangout under the watchful glare of the surroundings Alps. Apologies for lack of photos 👀

We did a few hikes and met much wildlife, admired waterfalls, rekindled our love of chess 🤪 and felt like we were living in the wrapper of a Milka chocolate bar, even though it originated from Switzerland 🇨🇭

Starnberg See
A two day visit to the Bavarian countryside by an idyllic lake which we’d believed would be an incredible time at one with nature in a quality hotel. It pissed down for 48 hours solid and the hotel was Fawlty Towers. But alcohol, waterproofs and backgammon got us through. Onward! taken in Starnberg See by @hughtodd

Munich = sehr gut!

A city brimming with beer gardens, sausages, urban surfers, incredible architecture, kitsch palaces, Olympic parks, warm friendly people and more. Sadly no sign of Harry Kane. Think he’s busy elsewhere 🙏🏼 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 V basic German is working well and we’re often asked if we’re Dutch! Next stop Austria 🙏🏼 taken in Munich, Germany by @hughtodd

Here we go! 40 years on from our last Inter Railing trip we’re off again. No hostels or sleeping on train floors hopefully. O level German will see us through Munich and Austria. Then Rach takes over with her fluent Slovenian and Hungarian 🤣🚂👍🏼🙏🏼 taken in St Pancras International by @hughtodd
