The proposed Parandur airport was planned over 5,746 acres across Parandur and 19 surrounding villages, with about 3,774 acres of private/patta land requiring acquisition. The environmental assessment identified water bodies, agricultural land and settlements within the project area; one assessment recorded around 1,425 acres of water bodies—about 26.54% of the proposed 5,369-acre airport area—and identified natural water channels through the site. The project was estimated at roughly ₹29,144 crore, meaning enormous public investment would be tied to a site involving major land, water and livelihood impacts. Most importantly, the Tamil Nadu government has now officially scrapped the Parandur project, citing the impact on agricultural land and the livelihoods of farmers and residents, while moving towards an alternative site with less agricultural disruption. Chennai absolutely needs additional aviation capacity—but development does not require sacrificing thousands of acres of productive land and water resources when alternative locations can be evaluated. The question is not “Do we need a second airport?”—we do. The question is whether Parandur was the right place. The data shows why that choice deserved serious opposition.
