C/2023 A3 at 400mm. Hoping to get out to some dark skies to capture a more detailed shot before this comet takes a long trip away from the sun.

Last view of the Milky Way core for the season. @vargentheviking and I traveled up to North East Oklahoma to get to some dark skies and open horizons and were not disappointed. It was seriously impressive how dark and wide open it was, rivaling some of the best nights of stargazing I’ve experienced.

This time lapse of the galactic core was taken with my camera mounted on an equatorial tracker so it is fixed on the night sky as the Earth rotates.

C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS) October 3, 2024

Fingers crossed that this comet holds together and maintains its brightness as we are a couple weeks away from its closest approach to Earth. The show is about over for the time being as the rising Sun hides its splendor but with a little luck we will have quite the spectacle shortly after sunset in two weeks time.

Comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan–ATLAS) rising this morning.
The comet reached its closest distance to the sun yesterday and will be visible in the early morning sky for the next week. It will then shift into the evening sky where with some luck it will be a sight to see. I was able to see the comet through my binoculars but with the predawn light it was hard to see more than a fuzzy ball with a tail. I’m hoping to get more detailed shots later in October.

This shot is a composite image consisting of a shot of the comet with my 400mm lens and a foreground shot of some liatris blooming around a mesquite tree shot at 12mm

Saw this thunder storm pushing in as I was about to fall asleep so I did the natural thing and grabbed my camera and stood in the middle of the street as it approached.
