Two years ago, we filmed the final shots of my second short film ‘The Art of Eating Sin’ and I decided to pay a visit while in the neighbourhood. #australiancinema #sinema #shortfilm by @hunterjleech

I don’t like patting myself on the back but I’ll gladly take the chance to pat my team on the back.

They were very successful at this first round of festivals. We took home the awards for Best Experimental Film, Best Short Film Producers and Best Filmmaker at the Golden Lion International Film Festival in India along with the award for Best VFX at the Absurd Film Festival in Milan, Italy for the incredibly talented Connor Beveridge and the award for Best Editing at the Eastern Europe Film Festival in Romania for Harriet Townsend. These two awards are special because Harriet and Connor are the only two people to work on all three films of mine in various roles and I couldn’t possibly have gotten this far without them.

We also received an honourable mention for Best Experimental Film at the Athens International Monthly Art Film Festival and one for Best Producers at the Reale Film Festival in Milan as well as an official selection at the Direct Online Monthly Film Festival in Michigan USA.

I wouldn’t be able to say any of this if not for the exceptional talent of the cast and crew. The above stills were all shot by the wonderfully talented cinematographers Evie Cole, Siddharth Kumar and Steph Grey whom I’m hoping with fingers crossed get some recognition for their work cause this film is beautiful because of them. Along with my Oscar worthy cast Giulia, Hayden, Brooke and Stephanie and my talented sound team Kieran and Charlie, I hope you all get some recognition and an award win to be proud of. In the meantime know that I’m so thankful for all of you and hope you know how proud I am of you.

Congratulations everyone and I hope I get to make more art with you all in the future. Until then, enjoy cause you earned it! 🎬 by @hunterjleech

My third short film ‘Nonexistent’ is officially a wrap! Which also means my ‘Axxon Trilogy’ is also officially a wrap! I just wanted to thank my cast and crew again, you guys are beyond the best and I especially want to thank each of you for all your hard work. We wouldn’t be here without all of you! This film was the most complex yet most rewarding film of the three and it was a labour of love that was only possible due to the people who shared this dream with me. You all deserve nothing short of the best and I hope you’re all as proud of yourselves as I am of you. To the cast, you all gave award worthy performances even without a single line of dialogue ever being spoken, that is raw and pure talent if ever I’ve seen it. I will look for any excuse to cast all of you again in the future! Thank you all again for helping bring this dreamy, surreal and experimental no dialogue film to life! All my love to all of you! 🫶

Back in the @uncannyvalley.film but this time as 1st Assistant Camera!

Thank you all for an amazing weekend and for allowing me to be a part of your world, I am forever grateful for each and every one of you.

From fruity shirts worn by Duncy, car shenanigans, lots of bug spray and late night gossiping til 2 in the morning: my life is forever better having been a part of it. Will be counting down the days til I get to see each and every one of you again! 🫶 by @hunterjleech

I don’t usually make posts like this but this is an exception. For those who know me, you’ll understand why I was so devastated at the passing of David Lynch. He was a filmmaker who I discovered when I was 20 years old and his work was unlike any other I had ever experienced. His work influenced me in a way I never imagined possible and shaped the way I approached my own films years later. Without him, I don’t know if I would be the filmmaker I am today.

It wasn’t just his work that I learnt from but the man behind the work. David was unlike any other filmmaker I was aware of, truly the personification of an ‘artist’. His kindness, compassion, quirkiness and most of all his wisdom and passion were all wells that I drew heavily from over the last few years. I now find myself when confronted with a difficult situation of asking myself “What would David do?” and re-watching any behind the scenes footage I could find for guidance.

I learned that sometimes it is better to prioritise a feeling rather than a conventional plot, that an aesthetic can sometimes achieve what a linear narrative cannot and that above all else you have to stay true to your ideas, exploring them for everything they’re worth. His technical approach to the craft of filmmaking and using the total language of cinema in order to present an idea is something I will study for the rest of my life whether it be in directing, writing, cinematography, lighting, sound design or editing.

I always imagined that one day I would get to meet him, this dreamer, shake his hand, drink some black coffee and listen to his old school American accent and vocabulary that sounded straight out of a 1940s movie. Most of all, I wanted to thank him for not only his work but his standard of character, for inspiring myself and countless others to do what we love. I wanted to thank him for making me the filmmaker I am today.

So, thank you David, for everything. It feels like I’ve lost a twin flame from another generation and era but you left behind a body of work I can forever appreciate, love, ponder and draw endless inspiration from, in that way you are always alive. I hope my films are evidence of my thanks.

My time spent in the uncanny valley ✨

Part of the joy of being a production assistant is getting to see up close and first hand the amazing work of everyone on a production. Amazing doesn’t do it justice: from the incredible makeup work, the motivated lighting team, the gentle and detailed directing, the methodical camerawork, to the brilliant talent of the four lead actors. You guys should all be incredibly proud of yourselves and I am more than happy to be able to witness the making of @uncannyvalley.film

My first short film has been on the festival circuit for a few months now and we are so happy to announce that we were semi-finalists at the ‘Stockholm City Film Festival’ and an honourable mention at the ‘Athens International Monthly Art Film Festival’.

And in a bucket list, pinch me moment, I won the Special Award for Best Director at the ‘Eastern Europe Film Festival’!

So proud of everyone’s work on this film and hope we have much more to celebrate in the future, thank you to all the festivals for your recognition!

Yesterday we recreated ‘Wild at Heart’ (1990), ‘Challengers’ (2024) and ‘Happy Gilmore’ (1996) with the duo known as Mattsquared. Or Mattception? I haven’t decided yet ⛳️🎾🎱
