Since we are the only team at McMurdo with full size snowcats we get to do some fun projects to help out around station.

This is the ice shelf to sea ice transition. The sea ice is frozen ocean, it’s saltwater that comes and goes seasonally. The ice shelf; while still being frozen ice on the sea, is freshwater glacier that slowly flows down off the continent and is mostly permanent.

The tides create a hinging effect where they meet, causing a crack separating the two. On top of that, the wind drifted snow is weighing down the sea ice and pushing it below sea level.

Here we are slot dozing until we hit water. About 14ft deep at the edge of the shelf shear wall. This will allow the sea ice to rise and solidify above sea level. It will also minimize the hinging effect at the crack. From there a ramp can be cut into the ice shelf and we can move equipment through the transition. taken in Southern Ocean, Antarctica by @hunterlamer

The Evolution Loop backpacking trip this summer.

These 56+ miles brought us into some of the most breathtaking zones I've ever seen while backpacking. Do I say that after every trip? Yes, but this was something else! 25 of those miles were on the JMT.

Saw the most deer I've ever seen while hiking in CA, some heat stroke *never drinking electrolytes with caffeine again*, the required cold plunge dips, goldens & brookies galore, constant wet feet from the endless stream/river crossings, along with lots of trudging & post holing through snow fields, went over Piute Pass (11,417'), Bishop Pass (11,972') & Muir Pass (11,955'), Colt watched in disbelief as a coyote at 11k' of elevation stalked a momma grouse & her chicks, each night's cowboy camping views were insane, tried to find the remains of the mass mule deer/mountain lion migration death field caused by an avalanche on Bishop Pass from many years ago (no luck), Le Conte Canyon, Dusy Basin, Evolution Basin, the spectacular John Muir Memorial Shelter, Thunderbolt & Isosceles Peaks, Mount Agassiz, Kings Canyon National Park...only a fraction of things that come to mind.

My luck did finally run out. I like saving weight by not packing a tent. Which, normally you can get away with in the sunny Sierra...normally. On the final night we got stuck in a thunderstorm just under Bishop Pass. Colt found me a "spacious" & "comfy" spot under a really big boulder. *Apologies to the marmot that I evicted* As the other two boys were dry & out of the wind in their fancy lightweight tents, I crawled in my new spot & got as cozy as I could in my sleeping bag & cooked dinner. I was out of the rain *mostly* but the gap under the rock was like a wind tunnel. A couple hours later, the storm subsided just in time for a SPECTACULAR sunset. I was able to give the marmot his place back & I set up camp somewhere that I could stretch out a little bit more & of course, see the stars. I wasn't even the first human to use the shelter, as there were broken beer bottles. Unfortunately, as much as I try, even at 11,000' above sea level, you still can't get away from shitty people.

As always, a wonderful time in the 🏔️ with two great buddies. by @hunterlamer

It's been a little over a week since I arrived back down on the ice. So far it's been a great time mixed in with lots of weather. Extended cold & high winds to be exact. Been many days in a row of -70°F temps, which means lots of office work rather than in the field. Thankfully we still have a few more weeks of sunrises & sunsets before the constant summer sun sets in.

Here are some photos from the beginning of this adventure. I am going to try & post more updates & photos this time around. However, with that said, I am back in the land of limited wifi & non-existent cell reception. So I apologize in advance if I am hard to reach for the foreseeable future, but I'll do my best! I sent a ton of postcards last go around but if you'd like one, let me know! I suppose to save anyone the effort, we aren't really receiving mail this year due to budget cuts. However, we still can get letter/flat mail if you feel so inclined!

Getting our sack lunches for the flight while loading the C-17 in Christchurch, New Zealand

View of Antarctica from the cockpit

Just landed on the compacted snow runway at Phoenix Field at sunset

Our transportation back to town. Old Delta passenger carriers from the Navy days back in the 70's (I think). Very slow. Took us over an hour to arrive to station.

Loading into the Delta

Greeted by the rare and beautiful nacreous clouds!

Waiting in line to check in for our flight day in Christchurch

Check out the temp of the PB before we fired it up...-34°C (-29°F)

It's a tad shitty out

Bunch of cargo in the C-17 with us

More beautiful clouds on arrival day

Towing the first of our modules off of a berm

Gusts of 72 Knots (83 mph) 🌬️💨

Thanks for the photo Joe

Nice

Going onto day 9 of waiting here in New Zealand for my commuter plane (USAF C-17) ride back down to Antarctica. There has been lots of bad weather down in McMurdo so with that comes lots of delays & canceled flights. taken in Christchurch, New Zealand by @hunterlamer

While I am currently getting ready to deploy back down to Antarctica for another contract, I figured I better share some more stuff from my year down there. Everyone is always asking me how many people were down there so here you go...

Right after I got to McMurdo, I started taking photos of the population sign (sheet of paper 🤣) whenever I noticed that it changed. Here is a timeline created with what I am pretty sure was every population update through the year & some change that I was down there. I thought it would be interesting to look back at the change over an entire calendar year. The high was 980 and the low was 264. taken in McMurdo Station, Antarctica by @hunterlamer

It's great to be back fishing for Wisconsin's state fish with my good buddy @asteines24 ! I caught my first musky in a long while and my biggest to date (42.75") & he caught a dandy himself (43.5") but far from his biggest. The two videos are the fights with each fish, both of which put on an aerial show for us. Until next time by @hunterlamer

Earlier in May Ben & I got to get out backpacking for the first time since I left for Antarctica back in 2024. It was a bit early, but we still had a blast. The snow pack kept us relatively low at around 12,000'. I wanted to get up higher to the lakes that hold the goldens, but it wouldn't have made any difference as they would have been completely frozen still anyways.

Got in some open air cowboy camping, fly-fishing, post-holing & glissading down the wet snow, the worst blisters that I have had in maybe ever, came down with a bad cold (that still lingers weeks later 🙄), checked out Ruby Lake for the first time...which was awesome, even though it was still 99% frozen over. Last but not least, I can't forget about the unmatched alpine views provided by the Eastern Sierra. Never ceases to amaze me!

This weekend we are headed back out on our next & biggest backpacking trip of the season to check off a few more bucket list mountain passes 🤞🏼

Oh...& let's keep protecting our wildernesses, roadless areas and the rest of our public lands why don't we 🤷🏼‍♂️ taken in Little Lakes Valley by @hunterlamer
