Since we are the only team at McMurdo with full size snowcats we get to do some fun projects to help out around station.

This is the ice shelf to sea ice transition. The sea ice is frozen ocean, it’s saltwater that comes and goes seasonally. The ice shelf; while still being frozen ice on the sea, is freshwater glacier that slowly flows down off the continent and is mostly permanent.

The tides create a hinging effect where they meet, causing a crack separating the two. On top of that, the wind drifted snow is weighing down the sea ice and pushing it below sea level.

Here we are slot dozing until we hit water. About 14ft deep at the edge of the shelf shear wall. This will allow the sea ice to rise and solidify above sea level. It will also minimize the hinging effect at the crack. From there a ramp can be cut into the ice shelf and we can move equipment through the transition.

We have a secret weapon here at Palisades Tahoe, and his name is Hunter Lamer. At 4am on storm days, Hunter can usually be found operating a snowcat. This means that we can send him a request for certain photos and we are always sure to get a response with exactly what we were looking for, captured masterfully. Hunter is a keen observer and shares perspectives of our mountain that would otherwise be seen by few.

Shirley Canyon hiking season is here! One of Lake Tahoe’s best half-day hikes, the Shirley Canyon trail takes you from flowing waterfalls and the high alpine Shirley Lake to huge granite boulders and blooming wildflowers. The waterfalls are pumping as snow high up on the mountain continues to melt.

Bachelor weekend in the books! Rolled down a backwoods Tennessee byway and stopped in Nashville for a party. Thanks to the gang for coming and making it one to (kind of) remember. One party down, One more big celebration to go!

We’ve been enjoying these small, frequent storms throughout the last week and we hope you have, too. As we move into April, we are in full #SpringSkiingCapital mode and planning for almost 2 more months of skiing and snowboarding.

- Right now, we’re still open 9am-4pm, but that may change as the weather warms up. We’ll post here & on our Operations Blog with any changes.

- Alpine’s Closing Day will be Sunday, April 28th. We’ll have live music on the Alpine Deck from 2-5pm to celebrate!

- Palisades will continue operations until Monday, May 27th, with full 7-day-a-week operations until the very end (weather & conditions permitting). Don’t miss out on the Made in Tahoe Festival on May 25th and 26th, preceding our Closing Day festivities.
