The rut isn't waiting on a cold front.

Daylight sets the timing, not temperature, so peak chasing dates stay surprisingly consistent year to year. Weather changes how much deer move in daylight, not when the rut happens.

Early to mid-November in much of the Midwest. Later in the Mid-South. December or January in parts of the Deep South.

The full state-by-state calendar is on the FieldGuide, plus how to narrow it to your county with RutCast (HuntWise Elite).

THE FLYWAY REPORT 001
OCTOBER 16–18, 2026

THE FIRST REAL PUSH?

The first real cold snap of the season is moving south, and things are starting to get interesting.

Minnesota is looking at northwest winds gusting up to 45 mph and freezing temperatures Saturday morning. North Dakota is already reporting fresh swans, redheads, and bluebills. The big mallard push? Still waiting.

Down south, North Texas is expecting strong north winds and temperatures dipping into the 40s.

One cold front won’t define the season, but it might be enough to get things moving. The question is, how far south will they go?

October has been good to me in the past and this year it didn't disappoint. In Michigan we don't get a lot of bucks that make it past their 3rd birthday, this guy however had a few more than 3. For three years he's been on and off the @revealcellcam trailcams. The first year he showed up I knew he was at least 2.5 but thought he could have been 3.5 years old in 2024. For 2025 he summered on the ground I was hunting but disappeared come October. This year though not only did he summer there, he setup shop. Once season started he decided to spend his days in about a 100 yard circle. Every morning he'd walk past the same camera on his was to lay down, and at night he go one of two directions. I put in a small clover plot last year that I had mapped out using @huntwiseapp that he really enjoyed, only issue is that the wind has to be perfect to hunt it. October 11 and 12 he showed on that plot and on the 13th I had the wind I needed to get in there. He walked down the exact trail he taken the two previous days and came to 43 yards where he stopped, for 26 mins, standing nearly completely still. I'm positive he caught the slightest scent from me but couldn't quite pinpoint where it came from or whether it was just left over scent from being there before. Eventually he took a few more steps, turned broadside, and stopped at 38 yards. Once I got a look at his teeth I was shocked to see that he's probably in that 6-7 year old range, a true Michigan warrior. He had lost a ton of weight the last ten days he lived and when field dressing him I noticed his lungs and heart were fused to the inside of his chest cavity, something I had never seen. His days seemed to be numbered whether or not a hunter was going to catch-up to him. I've pulled his lymph nodes and will be submitting them for testing. by @huntwiseapp

The October lull gets blamed for a lot.

Fewer daylight sightings. Slower trail cams. A stand that looked great two weeks ago and now feels dead.

Are the deer really moving less, or did the pattern change?

By mid-October, food, pressure, cover, and weather can all shift where bucks feel comfortable moving in daylight. Sometimes the answer isn't to wait for November. It's to figure out what changed.

Real or excuse? Tell us below.

Waiting on Go… we can’t stress using a well trained retriever enough! A steady dog with blind manners makes the hunt less stressful & more enjoyable!

If Columbus Day means an extra day out of the office, we can think of a few places we'd rather spend it.

Check the wind. Look at the conditions. See what's been moving.

Then go make the most of a Monday in the woods.

Who's hunting tomorrow?
