I was very unsure this buck was going to survive winter, so I was surprised (and very relieved!) to see his face last weekend.

In late October, he had broken a rear limb. In early November, shed his antlers and his body mass was severely decreased to the point of almost looking emaciated. I didn't see him again until early December and at that time, he wasn't using one of his front limbs and was barely able to hobble around to feed before he needed to lay down again. I saw him once or twice in January and he looked god awful. I was sure when I didn't see him again, he had passed.

This year is when he should entering his prime and had he not been injured, I think he would have really blown up. Instead, he's actually much smaller since his body had to use those minerals to heal his injuries instead of growing antlers. It'll be interesting to see if he stays that size next year or not and if this permanently stunted his antler growth. But it's absolutely crazy how resilient these animals are and I am so glad to see he made it through that harsh winter!

THE FLYWAY REPORT 001
OCTOBER 16–18, 2026

THE FIRST REAL PUSH?

The first real cold snap of the season is moving south, and things are starting to get interesting.

Minnesota is looking at northwest winds gusting up to 45 mph and freezing temperatures Saturday morning. North Dakota is already reporting fresh swans, redheads, and bluebills. The big mallard push? Still waiting.

Down south, North Texas is expecting strong north winds and temperatures dipping into the 40s.

One cold front won’t define the season, but it might be enough to get things moving. The question is, how far south will they go?
