Today it's 74 degrees in Sun Valley, Idaho. Soon enough, the last warm days will fade and the roof of our Ketchum Modern project will be buried in snow.

This modern mountain house is built for tough conditions outside. As the primary home for a family of four with two boys, it's built for rough-and-tumble conditions inside, too.

Our Bethlehem Road project sits just off the shore of a large, beaver-dammed pond in the Western Catskills.

The site plan combines a modified Medium Bar and an ADU. All of the main house's spaces are oriented toward the pond view. For movie night, a projector screen can drop down in front of the glass facade in the evening. We designed the ADU as a writer's cabin, a kind of contemporary Thoreau retreat, lined with full-height bookshelves and oriented to feel secluded.

Our client bought an underused farm outside Roxbury, NY, with an old barn, creek access, and mountain views.

We’re turning it into a three-unit micro-hospitality destination built around a working organic farm, with the barn becoming the central gathering and event space.

A big part of rural placemaking is seeing the potential in land that others overlook.

Not changing what makes a place special, but finding the right use, program, and level of intervention to make it more valuable, more useful, and more alive.

That thinking is at the core of the HUTS approach.

One of our rallying cries when designing hospitality is: create something specific for someone specific.

Call it knowing your customer. Call it product-market fit. Either way, having a point of view is usually better than creating something generic that plenty of people notice, but nobody really cares about.

The El, our project in Davis, West Virginia, is designed around a very specific guest: parents coming from the DC metro area with toddler-age kids who want an easy way to spend a few days outside.

That clarity shapes a lot of the design decisions.

The goal isn’t to cover the property in plastic play equipment or make the place feel overtly kid-focused. It’s to make subtle moves that are genuinely useful for families while still feeling considered and elevated.

Here, that means integrating a crib / toddler bed directly into the millwork instead of treating it as something that gets dragged into the room after the fact.

A small detail, but one that tells the right guest: we thought about you when we designed this place.

Summer's lakefront days are over in Southwest Michigan, but our Pullman project is gearing up for construction.

We're onboarding the build team and working through the permit office's questions, with the goal of breaking ground in October.

The home is a modified Village Standard, reconfigured into a U shape with a deck and pool tucked between the two wings. A garage with an ADU upstairs gives overflow guests a place of their own. The whole property works as a compound unto itself, designed for family gatherings and a year-round relationship to the lake.

There are only a few weeks left in the regular trout season in the Catskills, which ends on October 15.

And there's no better place to fill your creel than our Fisherman's Retreat home in Kenoza Lake, NY. It's steps from one of the region's famed trout streams, with an elevated, rustic style that feels like sleepaway camp for adults.

Construction is moving along on our restaurant project in Roxbury, NY, right across Main Street from the HUTS showroom.

It's a commercial project, and it sits in the middle of the village. But what strikes us is how much The Dixon Roxbury has in common with our residential work.

The form is a kind of reimagined barn. It's familiar, vernacular, and fairly simple to build.

The setting is in town, but the town sits inside a much bigger wilderness, with miles of Northern Catskills mountains all around it.

And it has to feel like two things at once: a home and a destination. Many of our HUTS residential projects are second homes for their owners and destinations for their rental guests. The Dixon will be a third place for Roxbury residents, somewhere to gather on an ordinary Tuesday. It will also be a culinary destination that pulls people in from towns across the Catskills and gives them one more reason to make the trip to Roxbury. by @hutsnyc

Form over function or Function over form?

We're big fans of form and function being one and the same. The use of the interior spaces at our Stone Ridge guest house project are perfectly legible from the outside. Left side, private spaces. Right side, public spaces (kitchen, dining, living). The middle, entry and pass-through to the pool.

The name HUTS itself is a nod to the Primitive Hut, an idea theorized by the French abbé Marc-Antoine Laugier in his 1753 Essay on Architecture. Laugier's version is basically an allegory: a man alone in nature, cold and exposed, builds himself a shelter out of tree trunks and branches, and that first instinctive act becomes the model for everything architecture does after it. Every column, pediment, and roofline that came later, in his telling, is just an elaboration on that first hut. Architects kept coming back to the idea for the next century, using it to argue about what architecture is actually for and where it's headed. It's a good name for our company, since we keep coming back to vernacular forms and asking what they were actually for before we add anything back.

Dormers are one of those forms. The word comes from the French dormir, to sleep, because these windows exist for one plain reason: bring light and headroom into an attic that used to be dead space under a roof. French builders in the 1600s figured out that a steep roof plus a dormer equals a whole extra livable floor, and the idea spread from there, through Dutch and English building and eventually into the American farmhouse.

Bate Road is shelled in and weather tight now, and the dormers are why that roof isn't just a lid on the house, it's floor area. Same old logic as three hundred years ago: don't waste the volume under the roof, and let the window do double duty as light and as shape. We're just still building and iterating on the hut. by @hutsnyc

How can a house feel at once like a grand lodge and an intimate cabin.

That's the question we asked of ourselves as we worked through the design of The Lodge House with our clients.

The public spaces of the Living / Kitchen / Dining room have a soaring, single-slope shed roof. The type of volume you might expect to gather in a modern landscape hotel - tall, airy, glassy, with exposed and expressive struture.

The private spaces are cozier and nook-y. Bedrooms have hidden millwork moments, built-in benches and are wrapped in warm wood tones.

The volumes of the various spaces speak to their use. The minimal palette of white oak, stone and concrete carries throughout, seamlessly blending between them.

Our Lodge House project in Livingston Manor, NY is permitted, build team is onboarded, finances are lined up, and it's breaking ground this fall.
