Demon Kakka •

Formerly known as Demon Kogure is the demon dude you see in Toho’s 1989 film Godzilla vs Biollante for a brief moment •

Most outside of Japan don’t know that he is one of Japans biggest Heavy Metal legends •

Outside of that, he is also a voice actor, musician, song writer, sumo wrestling commentator, and even a Journalist and radio show host plus much more • His radio show is sort of how the spark was lit for him to appear in Godzilla vs Biollante •

Essentially he was excited about the then new film and brought it up on his radio show as well as mentioning wanting to be in a Godzilla film • Little did he know someone at Toho was a listener and granted his wish • Obviously him being in the film was not planned so his seen was a very last minute final shoot •

Demon Kakka first came to fame in the 80s as the vocalist for the heavy Metal band Seikima ll •

In the 90s he began a solo career and has just been an entertainer over all for years in many different ways •

He has also always been a major anime, gaming, and Tokusatsu fan but he is undoubtedly a massive Godzilla and Kamen Rider otaku •

Check out the last slide as you see the young Demon without makeup doing a comedic bit on a gong show •

FANTAZONE 1990 •

This awesome stop motion short you see here was designed and animated by none other than Keita Amemiya as well as Takayuki Takeya •

The skeletal horned character is the Vampu which was a character and garage kit by Takayuki Takeya •

Fantazone 1990 was a large horror film event that was held at Tokyo Shinjuku Milano building • The event screened quite a few films but most notably. Basket Case 2, Peacemaker, House of Clocks, and Frankenhooker just to name a few •

This short is one of Keita Amemiyas earliest works that was also the catalyst to help bring about his work on the first Zeiram film •

Also to note those same films under Fantazone will have this short before the film starts when on vhs •

The Japan Monster Makers Contest •

Farther down the page I covered the first Monster Makers Contest brought to the world by Screaming Mad Goerge in LA in 1986 •

Well Screaming Mad George also had an idea of having one go on in Japan to give Japanese suit makers and makeup artists to have there chance at a go with the contest and everyone involved was not disappointed •

The event showed that even in Japan there is a whole lot of talent as well •

What you see here is coverage photos of the event from the pages of the 1988 volume 40 issue of Uchusen Magazine •

The contest for Japan was held at Seed Hall in Shibuya, and like the contest before, Dick Smith, Steve Johnson, and Mad George were judges for this event and I’m sure it was an unforgettable night for all that were involved in this event •

One of the winners at this event was Taishiro Kitani who is active within Uchusen magazine • Also what was known as the Seibu Special Award went to Yusuke Takayanagi who also was one of the handful of winners at the US Monster Makers Contest •

Rather in the past or in the current day, it’s always great seeing practical effects and makeup artists works being celebrated because it is very much needed, especially in the world today •

1977’s HOUSE

This movie is directed by Nobuhiko Obayashi & written by Chiho Katsura and Chigumi Obayashi •

Starring: Miki Jinbo , Eriko Tanaka , Ai Matubara , Kimiko Ikegami , Kumiko Oda , Mieko Sato , Masayo Miyako and Yoko Minamida

House is a trippy and colorful horror movie which anybody that’s seen the film would tell you is a fun wild ride •

The films rise is even interesting as well, because it spawned out of Obayashi being contacted by Toho Sudio • They wanted a film done in Japan that would spawn popularity and a craze like the 1975 JAWS did in that time and Toho contacted Nobuhiko Ohayashi to be the director to do it •

This film was supposed to be a Japanese response to Jaws but takes a completely different turn and actually became a Japanese comment about how films were done in the west at the time and essentially parody’s commercial norms that were done at the time to grab audiences, thus the film rejected the normal ways films were being made at the time in Hollywood which at times crossed over to how films were done in Japan as well •

This film is also sort of a family project in a way because the films co writer is Nobuhiko’s daughter, Chigumi Obayashi • Nobuhiko wanted to create something that was strange and out there, horrors and fears that couldn’t be explained, so he consulted his daughter about the film’s script and ideas for it • He wanted fears that couldn’t be thought of by the mind of an adult and knew children often have nightmares and fears that can’t be explained, but this films ideas didn’t just come from Nobuhiko’s daughter, He himself also put his experiences into the script and design of this film as well • Nobuhiko was one of the many young survivors of the nuclear attack on Hiroshima and lost everything from it at the young age of seven • He put this experience into the film, essentially he poured out his heart into this film, showing that just in a matter of minutes your life can go from being happy go lucky, to then almost instantly becoming a nightmare •

Godzilla Final Wars Behind The Scenes •

This movie released in 2004 for Godzillas 50th Anniversary and was the final film for the era of Godzilla films known as the Millennium series•

So many know about this film to where going deeper into it is not even needed • Final Wars is a decisive film with some absolutely loving it, and others absolutely hating it •

This also would be the last Godzilla movie we would see until Legendary Pictures would release there film Godzilla in 2014 which would be the beginning film of the Legendary Pictures Monsterverse films which set in motion a new era of the Godzilla franchise •

Godzilla Final Wars would also be the last time we would have a full practical effects man in suit major picture Godzilla film, but would not be the last Godzilla project to happen that involves a man in suit and practical effects •

1999’s Wild Zero •

This movie is a gritty Japanese comedy horror Alien and Zombie film That will have you glued to your seat •

The movie is directed by Tetsuro Takeuchi and stars Masashi Endō as Ace , Kwancharu Shitichai as Tobio , Makoto Inamiya as The Captain, and the real life legendary Japanese hard rock greaser band Guitar Wolf as themselves •

This film was made as being somewhat of a promo or showcase if you’d like for the band themselves •

For a quick synopsis of the film, Aliens are attempting to invade earth and in doing so, turn humans into zombies • While this is going on Rock band Guitar Wolf is playing a show and after said show has a situation with the club owner they have known for years which ends up in a stand off • Ace who is a fan of the band happens to over hear what’s going and ends up unexpectedly helping out Guitar Wolf with this situation •

From then on Guitar Wolf becomes his saving grace whenever he’s in trouble by Ace being given a whistle to use whenever he’s in need of help • From then on you See Ace go though different shenanigans with the main one being his times with Tobio and Guitar Wolf also doing there thing which all leads up to everyone in there own way battling the Zombies and saving the planet •

Synapse release this film in the united states on DVD in 2003 and within the special features was behind the scenes stuff and other goodies but there was also a drinking game within the special feature as well •

This is definitely one film that you need to watch yourself to truly experience • I highly recommend this film to all movie buffs and especially fellow fans of Japanese media and pop culture •

1966 War Of The Gargantuas •

What you see here is a mix of still shots and behind the scenes photos •

This film is one of Toho studios great none Godzilla kaiju/creature films that they put out during the showa era • The Japanese name of the film is Frankenstein’s Monsters Sanda vs Gaira •

War Of The Gargantuas is considered a favorite and classic among diehard movie fans as well as kaiju and tokusatsu otaku with major names in the west being fans of the film as well such as Tim Burton, Brad Pitt, Martin Scorsese, Quentin Tarantino, and Guillermo Del Toro just to name a few •

War Of The Gargantuas has also had a major influence in art and media from the west and east which if you love anime and think this looks familiar, you aren’t wrong • This film was one of a few kaiju and daikaiju films that gave influence on Hajime Isayama in creating the manga and anime ATTACK on TITAN plus also did give some inspiration for the Shinji Higuchi directed live action AOT films in influencing the main character Titans within it •

WOTG stars some of Toho’s A list actors that Godzilla fans would recognize as well as American actor Russ Tamblyn that many would mainly know of from West Side Story which Tamblyn for years wasn’t a fan of working on the film and it’s very known of him being difficult to work with on the film and even when it came to his dub work on it but in recent years he’s come to soften up on his feelings about the it •

This film is a very loose sequel to Toho’s 1965 film Frankenstein vs Baragon which is why the Japanese title is what it is •

If you haven’t seen this film yet I highly recommend checking it out as it’s definitely one of Toho’s best but if you want to see it dubbed, make sure it’s the UPA dub that was headed by Henry Saperstine •

I would go into greater detail here and give you a quick synopsis but sadly The caption box space here is limited •

1993’s Adventure Godzilland 2

This show aired weekly on Thursday mornings within the hour of seven AM on Japanese television and was sponsored by Bandai to promote the upcoming film Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla •

What you see here is the first episode of the second season of the show •

The reason there is a 2 in the title is because the first season of Adventure Godziland aired in 1992 to 1993 with that one being done to promote Toho’s 1992 film Godzilla vs Mothra •

Within the show was live action, animated segments, as well as fun games • This episode has two musical segments with one being an exercise dance segment with that track being called Godzilla Sofamiredo •

After these TV episodes were done, Get Going Godzilland would come out as VHS release OVA series which was children’s educational videos that dropped between 1994 till 1996 •

There was alot of Godzilla related things going on in Japan during the 90s, more then western fans really knew and these are just some of the many projects and releases that happened •

All of the Godzilla shirts and merch you see in this show was very available at the time in Japan through magazines and certain stores like the Godzilla-ya store at the time and the Kobe Godzilla store that was around at the time up until the great Hanshin earthquake struck the region it was at in 1995 •

Also yes part of what is known as the Dragon Ball Z opening was sampled for Adventures opening but here has some slight differences •

GAPPA 1967 Behind the Scenes photos •

Colossal Beast Gappa though in the west it’s known as just GAPPA, was an interesting daikaiju film that was directed by Haruyasu Noguchi and written by Gan Yamazaki with the film being based off a story by effects production designer Akira Watanabe •

The film was produced by Nikkatsu and Nippon Special Effects Motion Picture Company and released in April of 1967 in Japan •

The film sort of follows some tropes of daikaiju films of the day which to summarize here, in the film, Rich Playmate publisher wants to create a theme park with wild and exotic animals • He funds an expedition with his employees and some scientists to find some •

The expedition group while out at sea spots an island with an erupting volcano and starts there mission there • They later discover an egg that after an earthquakes hatches and a baby bird lizard like creature is seen with this being the baby GAPPA •

The expedition takes the baby Gappa back to the Japan with them but little did they know the creatures parents are alive and well and go on a mission to retrieve the young creature •

The film is definitely a popcorn flick within Tokusatsu but one I’d say check out at least once for sure, it’s sort of in a way like a Japanese version of the British 1961 daikaiju film Gorgo •

1995’s Gamera Giant Monster Midair Battle as seen in Uchusen Magazine •

Known mostly as Gamera Guardian Of The Universe, this film was directed by Shusuke Kaneko, written by Kazuori Ito, yes anime fans, that Kazuori Ito, with special effects being directed by Shinji Higuchi and the great music of this film being done by Kow Otani

This was the first film of what would be known as the Gamera heisei trilogy • The three 90s Gamera films even to this day have been dubbed by fans alike as STILL some of the best daikaiju films ever made, even being said to be better than the Godzilla films of the same decade, with even some saying, being on the same level as Godzilla Minus One •

This first film begins the trilogy which rewrites Gameras origin story with the version here being a man made vessel created by the people of Atlantis to protect them and the earth from danger but most notably the shadow of evil known as Gyaos which was also a creation by Atlantis that went wrong •

This film starts with a ship carrying a tone of plutonium running aground on a giant atoll that’s just floating across the ocean • Not long after that event, a strain of disappearances and attacks on people, homes, and businesses starts happening on an island called Himegami Island • Which is where the bird demon like creature Gyaos is eventually seen and spotted •

The atoll is eventually found again by a research team that is looking for it that lands on it and starts investigating it • A stone tablet monolith is discovered sticking out of it slightly and is eventually dug out • Before that however is the discovery of comma shaped magatama that are all over the atoll • If you haven’t guest it already then yes, this atoll is actually rock and stone that’s totally covering Gamera •

The showa era Gamera was known as the friend of all children and Shusuke Kaneko and team still gives the film that connection to showa Gamera roots with Gamera having a connection to humanity though one girl, Asagi Kusanagi played by Ayako Fujitani ( yes I know, daughter of Steven Seagal ) through the magatama that was given to her by Yoshinari Yonemori who is played by Tsuyoshi Ihara •

Zeiram 2 Coverage & Behind The Scenes as showin in Uchusen magazine •

This film is the sequel film 1991’s ZEIRAM, which you can find out about here on the page •

These two Zeiram films were directed and designed by Keita Amemiya with Hajime Matsumoto as the writer on this one •

Yūko Moriyama is back as Iria and on earth again with her AI computer partner Bob and also this time her other partner Fujikuro played by Sabu •

What you see here is mainly the behind the scene coverage of the Bounty Hunter scenes of the film •

Keita Amemiya was a director that really created for the fans and in this film he chose to go the DIY route with the Bounty Hunter scenes of this film •

Instead of hiring actors, Amemiya put out a call for cosplayers in B•CLUB magazine for cosplayers and fans alike to play the rolls of the bounty hunters in the film •

He held in person auditions to choose which of the custom cosplays would fit best within the film which coverage with video of this all can be found further down the page •

For a quick synopsis of the film,
In Zeiram 2, Iria was given a new android as a trainee but it later malfunctions in battle and turns on her due to it being infected with a Zeiram • To make matters worse, Fujikuro tries to still an ancient artifact that Iria had in her possessions there •

Iria later finds herself in another battle with Zeiram with Iria later calling her two old pals, Kamiya and Teppei which are once again played by Yukijiro Hotaru , and Kunihiko Iida as Teppei when she is in need of help •

Over all the film is another home run from the legend that is Keita Amemiya and I highly recommend checking this film out if you haven’t yet, but definitely see the first Zeiram movie if you can before hand •
