🪷 Another commission that I was overjoyed to work on for a very dear friend. This was in celebration of her marriage earlier this year and she specifically requested a vintage feel, inspired by art nouveau and especially early 20th century poster design. It was such a tremendous joy to be able to create something for her special day and I am so happy with how this piece turned out. 🪄 Impossible things are happening every day 🪄 (If you saw the first upload of this no you didn’t, insta lowered the quality for some reason so I re-uploaded) Slowly getting through my backlog of commissions 🫣 I am so sorry to everyone who has been waiting patiently but I am so appreciative of your patience. This piece is for my cousin Caitlyn who has me re-illustrate this moment from the Perrault Cinderella fairytale every few years. The earliest drawing (second slide) is from when I was a kid, I don’t remember how old I was. The second drawing (third slide) is from when I was in college, and she wanted it done in black pen and ink to mimic the lineart style of the first piece. This time she requested the illustration be done in gouache and painted in color, so this piece is done in gouache. ❄️ Beware The Frozen Heart ❄️ Ever since D23 last weekend I cannot stop thinking about Frozen 3 and the newly revealed villain!! Shoutout to @girliesandghoulsii and @princessauroraobsessed for getting me the scoop before anyone else and for @mymiraculoustower for dissecting the song lyrics to figure out as much of the story as possible with what little we have. For this piece I tried to root it in the lyrics of the extended version of “Frozen Heart” performed at the expo by @idinamenzel and @kristenanniebell, and reference the details shown in the preview footage and concept art at the expo. Animated style is HARD for me so I looked at a lot of @claireonacloud artwork for inspiration, and especially the preliminary Frozen sketches by Jin Kim (couldn’t find an insta for him, but he’s THE GOAT!) I also tried to reference details in earlier designs for Elsa in the way I attempted to flesh out the “evil ice queen” and while this may not be how she actually looks from the front, I had a lot of fun playing around with how I would have designed an evil ice queen in the world of the Frozen films. For my dear friend @princessauroraobsessed, a painting I promised years ago and which has taken me forever to get around to- but I did! It’s been such a pleasure to know you all these years, going back to d23 2019! I am so grateful to know you!! I constantly go back and forth on whether I prefer Aurora in pink or blue, thus ended up being a pink-heavy piece but I underpainted her gown with shades of blue so it is still there! For this piece I was particularly inspired by the lesser-known concept artworks by Kay Nielsen completed around 1951-53, before Eyvind Earle was appointed as style guide. It’s interesting to note how much of the style of the film was already present in Nielsen’s works even before Earle’s influence took over the film. I tried to combine both artists styles here. The fabulous, one and only @jodi.benson as The Witch in Into the Woods! This is not a role I ever imagined Jodi Benson performing and somehow it feels as if it was written for her- a testament to Sondheim’s writing ability and certainly an endorsement for Jodi’s skill to put her stamp on any role and make it entirely her own. A fun fact about Into the Woods you may not know is that the original Broadway production was developed in the exact same time frame as Disney’s The Little Mermaid, with Jodi Benson’s casting and recording happening concurrently with the development of Sondheim’s Into the Woods. The earliest known work-print for The Little Mermaid is dated November 4, 1987 while Into the Woods premiered on Broadway on November 5, 1987! One thing I adore about @daisymccarthytucker’s dress for Jodi’s Witch is the infusion of mermaid-adjacent motifs such as beaded lace that calls to mind the imagery of a mermaid tail. This painting is in celebration of the brilliant musical work of @brauhala of whom I have had the pleasure of getting to know these past few years after being a fan from afar! For the uninitiated, in addition to being an incredible pianist and musical director, Benjamin created the Broadway Princess Party at 54 Below which subsequently went on to tour the country as a concert series and had a tremendous culmination at D23 back in 2024 which I had the pleasure of attending! The work he does to celebrate the singular talents that we all adore is commendable, and his unique way of intertwining beloved melodies into breathtaking new presentations is something I will always return to for inspiration. I LOVE what he did with Into the Woods, a musical I have seen countless times over the years, where seeing it at @drphillipsctr this summer I felt as if I was hearing parts of the score I had never heard before, or hearing beloved songs for the first time again. I hope that this painting captures just a fraction of Benjamin’s spark. I created this painting to celebrate the one and only @kathrynjeannash who brilliantly portrayed Cinderella in the @drphillipsctr production of Into the Woods. Kathryn is a force to be reckoned with on stage and Cinderella feels like a true culmination of her singular talents. All those years ago she brought Snow White to life in the video crafted by @daisymccarthytucker that I helped design, and it is full circle to have the tremendous honor of providing her patchwork shawl to this production of Into the Woods to accent her wonderful Daisy original costumes. Though Cinderella does not undergo a costume transformation as depicted here in this painting, I chose to utilize my artistic license and depict what could be! This painting celebrates the wonderful @thom_bradford_ who marvelously embodied The Wolf and Cinderella’s Prince in the @drphillipsctr production of Into the Woods. It has been wonderful to see him step into this role, and in the beautiful costume work of @daisymccarthytucker. So many fabulous character choices were made and this version of The Prince felt entirely new to witness live! I started this painting several weeks ago to celebrate my longtime friend, collaborator, coconspirator, @daisymccarthytucker! It has been a pleasure to witness her creative journey over the years and to be along for that ride at certain points (shoutout if you remember the Snow White trailer!!) A few years ago she created a breathtaking Cinderella costume inspired by Into the Woods, which I attempted to recreate here. It is essentially a spiritual prelude to the production of Into the Woods she crafted this summer and I began my paintings for this production by painting the show’s designer herself. The new @disneystore Vanessa doll reminded me that I made this OOAK wedding Vanessa doll four entire years ago and never posted the finished thing 🫣 this was one of the projects I started in 2021 before my grandmother’s death and it took me ages to finish afterwards… just like it took me ages to photograph and edit these pictures! Oops. 💐 I was inspired by the designs of Maria Björnson, one of my favorite costume designers, in particular her design for Christine’s wedding dress in the original production of The Phantom of the Opera. I used that as my main inspiration and tried to infuse the design with references to Vanessa/Ursula and the ocean. See how many you can find! I was also inspired by my dear friend @theycallmeobsessed and wanted to depict Vanessa as a facetious “blushing bride” with a totally innocent (FAKE) expression. #MerMay day 31 - Seafoam For today’s prompt I wanted to harken back to the Hans Christian Andersen Little Mermaid, since it’s the piece of merthology that gave us “mermaids turning into seafoam when they die” as a concept. I made this statue referencing the Copenhagen mermaid statue a few years back and felt like it was the perfect piece for this prompt. I sculpted the mermaid and rock base out of buff stoneware and glazed her with midfire glazes. I wanted to go for a natural palette and call back to the colors of the actual Copenhagen statue. The rock was glazed with Albany Slip over Indigo Float. The mermaid’s body was glazed with Textured Amber (one of my all time favorites) while her hair is Iron Luster. Her hair was glazed with Temmoku over Deep Firebrick. Her “bra” is Flambé without zinc free clear on top so the purple tones burns out. Her tail is a thin application of Blue Rutile to have the brown notes come through. I hope you enjoy her! #mermaid #pottery #ceramic #sculpture by @hwilki

#MerMay day 30 - Chibi For today’s prompt I chose to showcase one of my teeny tiny “chibi” mermaid figurines! I sculpted this mermaid very quickly to test out a glaze combination. She was sculpted out of buff stoneware and glazed with midfire glazes. Her hair and tail are Bougainvillea, Running Hot Chowder, and Blue Rutile on top (about 2-3 coats of each), while her skin is Ironstone.
