D23 Expo of yesteryears memory roundup! Wow I didn’t think I’d get so emotional looking through all my photos but I did and now I wish I was there this week! Mainly because I miss all the people and friends I’ve made there.

The new @disneystore Vanessa doll reminded me that I made this OOAK wedding Vanessa doll four entire years ago and never posted the finished thing 🫣 this was one of the projects I started in 2021 before my grandmother’s death and it took me ages to finish afterwards… just like it took me ages to photograph and edit these pictures! Oops.

I was inspired by the designs of Maria Björnson, one of my favorite costume designers, in particular her design for Christine’s wedding dress in the original production of The Phantom of the Opera. I used that as my main inspiration and tried to infuse the design with references to Vanessa/Ursula and the ocean. See how many you can find! I was also inspired by my dear friend @theycallmeobsessed and wanted to depict Vanessa as a facetious “blushing bride” with a totally innocent (FAKE) expression. I hope you enjoy this doll!

🧜🏽‍♀️ Out of the sea… wish I could be… part of that world 🧜🏽‍♀️

The devil works fast but I work faster! And just like that, we have our first look at the incomparable @hallebailey as Ariel in Disney’s live action The Little Mermaid. Just from the teaser trailer alone we know that Halle is perfect for the role and embodies Ariel’s curiosity, wonder, longing, desire, strength, and determination with ease. In just the few lyrics she sings in the teaser it is obvious that no one is better suited for the role than Halle. Her voice is that of an angel.

I am very pleased with the design that Rob Marshall chose for Ariel. It is just reminiscent enough of the classic animated character, while still feeling heightened and surprisingly magical. I’m especially in love with the iridescent tail and multitude of fins! I hope that you enjoy my take on our mermaid princess in doll form 💖🧜🏽‍♀️

🌈 It’s far, far away… behind the moon, beyond the rain… 🌈

And just like that, we finally have our Dorothy of the Wicked film universe! I was waiting to post the face of my ooak doll until the real Miss Dorothy Gale stepped forward, and now she has! @bethanyweavesx did such a wonderful job conveying the spirit of Dorothy without even showing her face, and that is a testament to her ability. When I began working on this doll in July I did not have much to go on besides the little glimpses of Dorothy from the various Wicked teasers, so I did my best to synthesize how I thought her outfit worked and what her face might look like. I used a @tonner.robert Basic Brunette Cami doll as my base which admittedly has a very similar face structure to Judy Garland, so she definitely has that overarching “vibe,” although I do think subconsciously or perhaps clairvoyantly I do see some of Bethany in the doll as well! I hope you enjoy the doll as much as I enjoyed making her.

🕰️ I’m limited… just look at me 🕰️

Here’s a closer look at the ooak doll of @idinamenzel I made using a @tonner.robert wicked witch base doll! I began working on her in January of this year and ever since completing her I have been tremendously happy to see her in my studio.

Like the Glinda doll, I began by consulting as many photos of the original dress as I could possibly find. It seems that Idina’s dress contained more color in the skirt than current dresses have, so I did my best to match up the colors. Each band of ruffles in the skirt was serged and pleated by me, layer by layer, to achieve the look and feel of the dress used in the Broadway show. I began by constructing a basic trumpet skirt and tweaked the pattern by adding godets for additional volume. Almost all of the colored ruffles match up with ruffles on Idina’s dress, although the “classic diagonal red ruffle” that I think is so indicative of the Elphaba skirt was not present in Idina’s original dress- however it WAS present in Idina’s London dress, so I decided to add it to my doll. The bodice was made first out of a sturdy black cotton, which I then hand-appliquéd with scraps of velvet, silk taffeta, and brocades. The bodice was then layered with thin tulle to “mesh” all of the fabrics together. I added a tiny piping ribbon around the upper bodice and beaded miyuki beads and tiny jet glass beads to the neckline. The hat is made of a jacquard which I flatlined with interfacing to give it more structure.

🫧 Look! It’s Glinda! 🫧

Here’s a closer look at my ooak @tonner.robert Glinda doll based on the stunning original Susan Hilferty costume design for @wicked_musical. I chose to stick with the original iteration of the costume, since over time it has become a bit more garish and caricature-like to me. I feel like the original version was closer to the Dior inspiration, and the lighter fabrics and paler sequins more evoked the feeling of a bubble.

I started by consulting as many photos of the original dress as I could, and patterned a scalloped skirt design so that I would only have to hand-sequin the smallest amount of fabric possible. Every single sequin was hand-sewn by me, and none of it was done by machine. I used a combination of fabrics to achieve the light and shimmery look, starring with iridescent satin layered with crystal organza and bridal tulle on top. My favorite detail is there are roughly ~15 sequins added to the skirt that came from an authentic Broadway bubble dress!!

Here are my custom @tonner.robert @wicked_musical dolls in all their glory!!! I hope you enjoy them as much as I enjoyed making them. Getting to see them in my studio every day brings me so much joy and I can’t believe I finally have high quality faithful recreations of the Broadway costumes in doll form.

Many years I have waited for dolls like these to appear…

In January of this year I decided to embark on a project that I have dreamed about since 2005- creating custom Wicked dolls using the @tonner.robert dolls as a base. I remember at the time thinking that the high fashion outfits reminded me of the Wicked costumes, and wondered why there was never a collab. As the years went by I fantasized about creating my own, but one thing or another always held me back. I was particularly scared of doing the sequin work for Glinda’s bubble dress. This year I decided to go ahead and take the plunge. Elphaba was tricky but I managed to finish her outfit in a little over a month. Glinda on the other hand took me three months of beading alone, not including patterning, construction, and jewelry. I can’t wait to show you more of these dolls!

One more Dorothy post for now! I couldn’t settle on a factory-made dog figurine for Toto so as of right now Dorothy is sans dog. Eventually I’ll probably just sculpt one myself because she really does need her beloved pet dog!!
