DUSK

My collection for @unchainedosu representing innocence, the beginning stage of a human trafficking survivors experience. This collection represents the innocence within all of us. My collection starts out with baggy silhouettes, reflecting the lack of restraint that comes with youth, freedom in movement, of our identity, and to grow. As the collection progresses, the silhouettes become more refined, more structured, mirroring the ways we are shaped over time. At the same time, the color gradually fades into darkness, symbolizing the quiet loss of innocence. The floral prints represent the freedom to grow in our youth, unfiltered, and unrestricted. One look disrupts this progression. The look with static denim and red stitching represents a moment of interference where innocence doesn’t slowly fade, but becomes distorted. Showing how anyone can be taken of their innocence by human trafficking at any time. This collection exists in that space of dusk where innocence is still present, but no longer fully untouched.

Thank you to everyone at @unchainedosu for creating a space to highlight and educate us on human trafficking.

Thank you to my models, college kids willing to take time out of their schedule to do something special and absolutely kill the runway!

I learned to grow in ways I couldn’t imagine. I did 5 fashion shows this year, got interviewed on live tv!, opened a studio space for my brand, started designing denim at Hollister, took one of my best friends engagement photos, overcame the top thrill 2, continued my deen during Ramadan, tried Khmer food from two different states and met so many amazing people this year. STAY BLESSED 💫 by @hydekoun

In honor of AAPI month, I have been working on a capsule of artworks.

1. FROM THE RUBBLE
Acrylic on clay, inspired by the Lakhon Khol, a Khmer dance mask, it resembles the story of my family and many other Khmer who fled Cambodia as refugees from the war. Its design is inspired by graffiti in the cities of America, paying homage to where I grew up, immersing two cultures into one.

2. WHERE TO GO
Cyanotype print on fabric with upcycled oranges bag. This resembles the various places across the US full of Asian small businesses. I took this photo in Baltimore, Maryland near a historic small Chinatown.

3. ១០៧៦
Cyanotype print on fabric with acrylic paint, lace trim, this print is a photo of my grandparents stained glass window, with a lace trim resembling the short curtains around their windows. A sense of nostalgia where the roots of my families history begins in America.

4. Yin Wall City
Cyanotype print on fabric, a photo I took in Chinatown, Chicago. The first china town I went to, a unique experience seeing Asian culture overwhelmingly, especially knowing the history of them and Asian discrimination.

5. With No Struggle, There is No Progress
Clay mask with repurposed sarong and acrylic paint. The words on the mask translate to: without struggle, there is no progress. This resembles the mindset of many Asians to be hard working and dedicate your life to what is important, but also the struggle many people in Cambodia went through in the war, but it also resembles the humanity of us all, regardless of a label, we all have to struggle to progress. The writing on the sarong says that destiny is in your hands. Representing that we can all choose our paths. This is also a homage to my Khmer middle name meaning Destiny. by @hydekoun
