“Shallow, Deep, Grain” is an audiovisual project centered on the surface textures of lichens, unfolding through moving images and sound.

There exists a world of epidermal forms composed of minute patterns and textures—surfaces that are everywhere, yet slip unnoticed from most forms of attention. Lichens are often mistaken for moss or fungi, but are in fact composite organisms formed through a symbiotic relationship between algae and fungi. Surviving on rocks, trees, and walls, they endure not by penetrating inward, but by remaining in contact with surfaces.

Without roots or a central organ, lichens exist horizontally, through continuous negotiation with their surroundings. Their survival is not a strategy of conquest or domination, but of persistent coexistence. Rather than digging into depth, they remain upon the surface; rather than invading, they spread; rather than arriving at a fixed and complete form, they are continually shaped through interaction with external conditions.

Here, the surface is not a mere outer skin, but a dense field of contact where life gathers, adapts, and persists.

“Shallow, Deep, Grain” begins with the epidermal textures of lichens and unfolds as a synesthetic exploration of depth, surface, and perception. It does not search for an essence hidden beneath the surface, but follows the layers of sensation and relation that surfaces generate and sustain. Clear contours dissolve into blurred textures, and the images resist becoming stable visual information; they merge with sound, taking on another kind of breath and rhythm.

The surface is never shallow. It is the condition through which relations emerge and life persists. “Shallow, Deep, Grain” remains with its subtle vibrations and transformations, listening to the fragile skins through which the world becomes perceptible.

Korean Salpuri Dance meets Japanese Butoh in an interactive dance performance in Berlin — becoming a gesture of women’s solidarity beyond borders!

An officially invited performance of the 2nd International Korean-German Dance Festival.

-Sunday, 19. July 2026 – 07:00 PM
-Studio1, Uferstudios, Berlin

‘Pseudo-Archaeological Translation: The Berlin Case’ is an interactive performance that combines contemporary performance art with media technology. The focus is on the lived realities of former Korean nurses and migrant women from various countries who now live in Berlin. Their bodies bear the marks of care work, shaped by both family and societal experiences. Drawing on their own stories and movements, they translate the diary of Trần Thanh Lan – a migrant who came to South Korea through international marriage migration and lost her life there. This embodied translation process raises questions about migration, identity, solidarity and cross-border empathy.

“소리꽃 위한 서정시(Ode to Sorikkot)”
23.08.2025
Plant Stories(@plant.stories_)
ZK/U Berlin(@zku.berlin)

“소리꽃 위한 서정시(Ode to Sorikkot)” is a poetic ritual, chant, and collective listening performance that imagines a time when plants and humans were attuned to one another. Extending from the previous project S.Abligua X Odekon, the work weaves together the recitation of poems written in the form of myths and folktales, voice, electronic sound, field recordings, and real-time environmental data collected from the performance site to construct a sonic fiction. Here, language not only delivers the meaning but also serves as poetic and sonic material. The phenomenon of “echo” is proposed as both a key concept for rethinking the relationship between plants and humans and a metaphor for symbiotic relations. Through this lens, the performance summons the cyclical memory of life—its continual birth and death—and expands the relationship between plants and humans toward ecological and planetary dimensions.

A Scenario Of A System Off
Premiere 18.-21. December 2025 Radialsystem

“A Scenario Of A System Off” is a new performance by Mexican artist Ixchel Mendoza Hernández, which invites us to grapple with our sense of perception. In the gaps between memory and imagination, the work explores how everyday gestures, words and surroundings change when systems of language and categorisation start to falter. Repetitive loops made out of movement, text and sound are used to transform normal situations - like the simple phrase “I sat here” - into riddles, contradictions and poetic detours. “A Scenario Of A System Off” will celebrate its premiere in Radialsystem shortly before Christmas.
Three dancers move in dialogue with “invisible” beings on the stage, forming a changeable interplay between bodies, voices and soundscapes. Lengths of material are used to create different spaces, becoming transparent shells that capture fleeting light or projections.
The performance engages with the power of the imagination as a political and philosophical tool: Instead of presenting a linear narrative, the performance unfolds as a dynamic system with different levels of perception and possibilities. “A Scenario Of A System Off” transports the audience into a world in which meaning is not tied down, exploring how repetition, transformation and associative perception can open new paths towards an understanding, imagining, and living of the world.

“Codas” tells the experiences and life journeys of three CODA (Children of Deaf Adults) in German sign language (DGS), as well as in German & English spoken language. The stories of CODAs are embodied by four performers. The performers—two of them Deaf and two hearing—express the tone, textures, rhythms, and emotions of the narratives through movement. A soundscape accompanies the piece, adding a unique color to each story. The first half of the piece focuses on the content of these personal accounts. In the second half, the narratives gradually fade, giving way to evolving choreography and sound. This shift mirrors how memories live in the body—deeply felt, yet often beyond the reach of words.

The performance is accessible for Deaf audiences and is a relaxed performance.

(Ode to Sorikkot)

Performance by @oddsonorous

(Ode to Sorikkot) is a poetic ritual, chant, and collective listening performance that imagines a time when plants and humans were attuned to one another. Continuing from the previous project S.Abligua X Odekon, Odd Sonorous draws on mythology and ancestral cosmologies to weave together spoken poetry, voice, sound composition, and real-time environmental data collected from the performance site, ZK/U. In a collaboration with ZK/U’s long term project ClimArt, Odd Sonorous processes recorded data from the rooftop weather station and soil sensors.

The live performance invites a form of listening that moves beyond language—into a space where resonance becomes a shared presence, memory moves in cycles, and being unfolds through echoic relation.

Odd Sonourous are @hyewon.suk and @anna_phaenarete_lioka.

Free entry.

S.Abligua x Odekon, 2022
4 channel Experimental film, archive.

“S.Abligua x Odekon” is an experimental film with 4-channel audio that actively adapts AI technology as a fundamental artistic imagination and inspiration.
The story begins with the discovery of a plant that once produced sound and is now considered extinct. Based on AI-generated visual and verbal botanic archives, the artists embark on a journey to recover the lost sound.

Whether humans have lost the ability to hear plant voices, or plants have ceased to sound within the human audible range, the work weaves ecological, social, and political causes of disconnection into a speculative narrative.

@oddsonorous (Anna Phaenarete Lioka and @hyewon.suk ) proposes listening as an act of reconciliation and symbiosis between humans and nature, through decolonial and decentralized practices made possible by current technology.

Intertwined Dialect, 2021
3-channel sound installation, Berlin, Germany.
Part of Climate Care 2021 at @floatinguniversity

“Intertwined Dialect” by Anna Fainareti Lioka and @hyewon.suk (@oddsonorous ) is a sound installation inspired by the spatial ecology of the Floating University, where human and non-human worlds converge.

The work explores sonic symbiosis, transforming human voices into the calls of birds, both living and extinct, through machine learning. These hybrid, synthetic vocalities are reintroduced into the site, generating an entangled acoustic dialogue across species, timeframes, and environments.

Ouroboros (2025)

“Ouroboros” is a self-organizing system that continuously reshapes and sustains itself through the interaction between its internal dynamics and external disturbances. Built on a 1D neural cellular automata, the system generates complex temporal structures emerging solely from local interactions between neighboring cells. As the model continuously updates itself, it tends to maintain a target sequence. Here, sound becomes the system’s living matter—projected through moving speakers and re-entering the system via a microphone. Human participation with the microphone introduces dynamic interference, challenging the system to regenerate, re-organize, and weave itself anew. In this endless cycle of self-creation and self-dissolution, “Ouroboros” reveals a sonic organism that listens to itself in order to remain alive.
