October 19: With the help of Audrey Briot, we captured the 21 cm wavelength hydrogen line from the Milky Way (at 1420.4 MHz). Although it's just a faint line for now, it already reveals the hidden pulse of our galaxy, and this is where we start building our soundscape. #radiocastronomy #milkyway #sonification #artandscience" by @hypha_etc

We are delighted to announce the selected artists for the 2026 edition of Night as Commons, our six week international residency program in Vármező / Câmpu Cetății. From 141 applications submitted from 26 countries, the international jury has selected five artists whose practices explore darkness as a space of perception, ecology and transformation. Jeanne Artemis (Germany) is developing an autonomous analogue sound system that translates nocturnal biological rhythms into evolving sonic ecosystems experienced in complete darkness. Audrey Briot (France) is creating experimental textile antennas to investigate how atmospheric and biological processes transform radio reception across the day–night cycle. Max Čuhel (Czech Republic) is conducting a comparative study of nocturnal pollinators between Vármező’s Dark Sky landscape and Prague’s light polluted industrial zone, using sculptural light traps as both research tools and artworks. Emma J Davis (Australia / Italy) is exploring how darkness reshapes spatial experience through walking, mapping, drawing and embodied observation, creating an open-ended archive of nocturnal conditions. Dominika Márton (Hungary) is researching night vision, visibility and protection through speculative textile experiments inspired by animal eyeshine and human nighttime technologies. During the residency the artists will be supported by three mentors: Irina Dumitru (Bucharest) - Physicist specialising in quantum information and interdisciplinary research on technology and society. Anna Szabó (Cluj) - Botanist and ecologist with over 25 years of experience in biodiversity research, habitat conservation and ecological restoration. Attila Tordai S. (Cluj) - Curator working across contemporary art, critical practices and interdisciplinary research in Central and Eastern Europe. We look forward to welcoming the artists to hypha_etc and beginning this shared exploration of darkness, perception and ecological imagination. The project is produced with the support of Culture Moves Europe (a mobility scheme funded by the European Union and implemented by the Goethe-Institut) by @hypha_etc

Hypha_etc is calling for applications from Europe-based artists for a residency in Vármező / Câmpu Cetății, Transylvania, Romania, from 1 October – 10 November 2026. Night as Commons explores darkness as a shared ecological, cultural and political condition. In a world increasingly shaped by artificial illumination, night has been fragmented, colonised and rendered scarce. Darkness — once a universal temporal commons — is now overshadowed by infrastructures that extend productivity, disrupt biological rhythms, and reshape the behaviour of humans and non‑humans alike. The residency invites artistic and research‑based practices that engage with — or depart from — themes such as: night‑time ecologies and photoperiodicity the cultural, poetic or symbolic dimensions of darkness sensory experience, perception and orientation temporal critique, labour and the politics of illumination speculative, spatial or ecological approaches to ‘unbuilding’ light light pollution, skyglow and disrupted rhythms The residency also offers interdisciplinary mentorship from experts in physics, biology and curatorial research, supporting both scientific grounding and artistic development. Applicants must be legally based in one of the Creative Europe countries including OCT/OR. More information is available in our bio. by @hypha_etc
Classroom #1 – And What Does the Background Say? An ecocritical and ecofeminist workshop led by Zsuzsa Selyem and Anna Zilahi 18-21 June 2026 Organized by tranzit .ro/Cluj and hypha_etc location: hypha_etc, Campu Cetatii, Romania by @hypha_etc
In 2 days, the first Classroom, “And What Does the Background Say?”, begins — an ecocritical and ecofeminist workshop led by Zsuzsa Selyem and Anna Zilahi. by @hypha_etc
CALL FOR APPLICATIONS "And What Does the Background Say?" - An ecocritical and ecofeminist workshop led by Zsuzsa Selyem and Anna Zilahi Date: June 18–21 2026 Location: hypha_etc campsite, Câmpu Cetății/Vármező, Mureș county, Romania Application deadline: June 10, 22:00 EET And What Does the Background Say? is a four-day workshop that approaches ecocriticism as a way of sensing, thinking, and moving together with a more-than-human world under capitalism. Language is our main medium, but it is never abstract: we will work with how words have weight, how they mark and police living bodies, and how attention can stay with the material and political conditions of speaking and writing. In the middle of a forested landscape, our sessions will be situated in the environment rather than just about it. Ecocritical discussions will decenter canonical human protagonists and redirect focus toward the so-called background: plants, animals, elements, infrastructures, and terrains that usually only stage the human plot, or are treated as resources, property, or scenery. Walks and excursions will become spaces for interspecies encounters and experiments in presence that resist the touristic consumption of nature. We will listen, touch, taste, and get lost a little, using these experiences as raw material for writing that takes seriously the beings we cross paths with, while transmedial practices help other forces — silence, noise, movement, emotion, weather, and infrastructure — enter the work. The workshop is part of The Classroom, a temporary learning community dedicated to slow, situated, and collective forms of study. The workshop is free of charge. Accommodation in 4-bed rooms and food are provided, with travel from Cluj-Napoca or Târgu Mureș on June 17 guaranteed by the organizers if needed. Places are limited to 8–12 participants. The application link is available in our bio.
