Hyphen Contemporary presents its inaugural exhibition ‘Consolidation is Reconsolidation’ at Region Concept Store, Mina Zayed, Abu Dhabi.

Memory is not a stored thing, consulted and returned intact. To recall is to reopen a memory and lay it down again, changed. Every consolidation is, in fact, reconsolidation. The memories we return to most often are what we have rewritten the most; the ones we love best are the least reliable. What we hold on to, we alter by holding.

The five artists in this exhibition work from things that happened: to them, to their families, to their countries, and to strangers whose names they will never learn. They work from what is held outside the body, in the archive, the file and the server, where memory appears permanent but is not.  Across photography, painting, sculpture and scent, the exhibition offers not a single account of the past but five incompatible ones.

What each makes is a second object; assembled from feeling, repetition, distortion and longing. A new truth in place of one that’s gone.

Exhibiting Artists: Rayan Aljneibi, Layla Doueidi, Sara Kamar, Martin Ong Yambao, Husna Samer

Cecelia Jihu-Sara is the founder of Hyphen Contemporary, a curatorial platform showcasing emerging practices and cultivating new collector communities. Half American and half Chinese, she grew up in London and studied mechanical engineering at the University of Edinburgh.

Her entry into the art world began five years ago, when she acquired her first artwork from an emerging gallery in London. The experience shaped her understanding of the important role emerging platforms can play in supporting artists and creating entry points for new collectors. She went on to gain art market experience working for a leading Dubai gallery and as an assistant art advisor, developing a particular interest in the growing ecosystem around emerging artists and collectors in the UAE.

Cecelia is currently completing an MA in History of Art and Museum Studies at Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi, where the idea for Hyphen Contemporary first took shape. by @hyphencontemporary
