ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: IONA BLUE
@i0na

My work is a ritual, a dance, a conversation, discourse between values and understanding of the land. Bonding the themes of ritual, folk traditions, cultural identity and nationalism. There is a magic of putting on a costume, you are bewitching the viewer to see you as different or more than yourself. It’s a garment of transformation. A becoming. You inhabit something else; someone else. Like old tales of those who could change their skin. Become a hare, raven, seal or even another human. Shrouded in a layer of disguise. In this costume I become a critique, a fool, a theory, an opinion. My performance partner embodies a rebel to mainstream narrative, a person of the land, a connected one. I believe it should be me- the artist to wear the costume that represents the darker side of humanity, to be uncomfortable and investigate what it means to bear that burden.

Lupoborous by Millicent Rose

Oh, beautifully illusive one,
Make truth my primary object.
For I dwell in reverie
Yet I desire divinity.

Spirit, permeate flesh of maker and made.
Distort my horizons and reveal the heavenly realm.
Meld landscape with memory.
Place living stone within oval.

May I reclaim ambiguity with vague goddess.
Permeating impermanence as portal.
A thin nothingness between something.

I intend to walk within the veil of the temple of nature,
A home, not somewhere to visit.
To listen to every gestation,
Determined to judge for myself.
Teeth to tail,
Lupoborous.

Lupoborous: lupus (Latin for wolf) + ouroborous (ancient symbol of snake eating its own tail). I merged these words together to represent the eternal never ending destruction and rebirth of all things, as well as the unity of all things. integrated with the wild self, of a she-wolf, Women who run with the wolves has been a crucial book for my self and artistic development. I work quietly in the shadows. All should read this book.

Iona and I birthed this altar together, yielding dirt divinity. We curated together the room as a dance, a reclamation of ritual and land. Rusty metal pieces alongside precious shells and florals. Representing the infinite divinity of the feminine. Thank you thank you thank you taken in Falmouth University by @i0na

A standing rock in the center of a field
Physical Border of trees on imagined ‘private land’
Light laying low in the sky
Illuminated golden at the hour of dusk
A land that tells stories and holds our hands

We are the green
We are the grasses
We are the soil
We are the trunks
And the branches

We are carbon and oxygen and CO2
Together
Being beings

They came
The two girls who wore costumes trying to say something
An idea that is attached to beliefs of identity

They were planted there
Discovering their body's
Exploring their environment

They came
Jumping and hopping and shouting silently

Touching the air
Grasping feelings

They joined us
In breathing this space
This moment

They were confused at what they are, who they are and why they chose love or hate
Moving to understand
Finding themselves attached to nation
Or to the land
To us

Anger bubbled and fizzed
We felt the heat and the pain

Then they striped themselves of the ideas they carry
Of the messages they internalize and spread

We all embraced
Naked

A Time lapse of my live writing performance MIND LIBRARY, this piece was made from my journals from the 5 years previous, it was all about letting the public crawl inside my head and read my darkest fears, silliest secrets and know my truth. It was a experiment in vulnerability and felt like an important part of healing journey. 5 hour long performance. 2024 by @i0na

A super fast walk through of 'THE GUESTS' collaborative show at the end of our two week residency @backlanewest in the town of Redruth 'drudh' meaning treasure in Cornish. We created work from haptic learning, performance, archives, collections and performance. Thanks to all who came and supported. We called ourselves the guests as we're aware of our outsiderness in this tight knit community and we wanted to make work as guests in a place and truly get to know the people, history and should of the place. We felt accepted with open arms and we collected stories and smiles. by @i0na

THE FOOL AND THE REBEL my dissertation performance with costumes I made, I was exploring the rise of nationalist politics and the folk tradition revival and how they interact and challenge each other. I wanted to create something of my own that contains elements of folk dance, fictioning, theater, nationalism and resolution. There is a magic of putting on a costume, you are bewitching the viewer to see you as different or more than yourself. It's a garment of transformation. A becoming. You inhabit something else; you inhabit someone else. Like the old folk tales of those who could change their skin. Become a hare, raven, seal or even another human. Shrouded in a layer of disguise.
The performance is a ritual, a dance, a conversation, discourse between values and understanding of the land.

In this costume I will become a critique, a fool, a theory, an opinion. My performance partner embodies a rebel to mainstream narrative, a person of the land, a connected one.
I believe it should be me- the artist to wear the costume that represents the darker side of humanity, to be uncomfortable and investigate what it means to bear that burden.

I want to try to understand, to force myself to question the views of others but also my own views. by @i0na
