October 10, 2026–February 21, 2027 | “Susan Chen: Rooms by the Sea”
📍 Edward Hopper House Museum & Study Center

In summer 2024, I spotted a handful of landscapes in @susanmbchen’s studio that buzzed with the warm, wistful charm that has always drawn me to Susan’s work. It has been a privilege to see this series expand, and, through dialogue with both Edward and Josephine Nivison Hopper, evolve.

Thank you to @kayembenne, @lizleggettart, @charisjcarmichaelbraun, and all at @edwardhopperhouse for running with this idea—and for all of the work and care that has gone into this exhibition. Thank you as well, @champagneandvitamins, for your contribution to the show’s catalogue.

For your immense support, gratitude to you all:
@pamelahornik and @davidhornik
@carlapshen
@the_eden_arts_foundation
@sohoartmaterials
@williamsburgoilpaints
@uffnerliu
@alejassanstudio

Most of all, thank you, Susan, for your trust and partnership!

Q1 ✅ with a few dizzying reflections on nearing three months @thhmuseum.

Summed up:

“There is no doubt in my mind that I move through life the way I do in part because I’ve never known a world without Hip Hop.“ (to @valentina.diliscia for @hyperallergic)

“Whatever you think Hip Hop is, there’s more to it. Whatever you think a Museum is, there’s more to it.“ (to @brokencool for @thhmuseum)

Full interviews in bio; more to come The silhouette of a bold font UPPER CASE H holds two H’s within, one above the other. On top, the H is red with bold, all caps text within that reads: “MEET THE TEAM: INDIRA A. ABISKAROON VALBUENA”; beneath is my headshot, with me standing in front of a muddled brown canvas with a fragment of a uniformed man’s body painted in a deep, warm blue. taken in The Hip Hop Museum by @i_abiskaroon

It is a profound honor to share that I have joined @thhmuseum as Creative Director and Director of Curatorial Affairs.

Stepping into this role is a singular experience in the simplest and truest sense. To be invited to help open a NYC museum—a new cultural institution with the expressed intention to honor, study, and preserve Hip Hop into the future—alongside the practitioners who originated the culture is the stuff of dreams.

Having entered my second decade as an arts worker and my third as a born-bred-and-never-left New Yorker, it feels as if all that I am and all that I’ve learned have led here. In service of a culture whose creative output has inspired the world over, I approach the task at hand grateful for the trust instilled in me.

I’ll see you in the Bronx.

❤️‍🔥

🥂 This Saturday, join us for the Opening Reception of Susan Chen: Rooms by the Sea and meet artist Susan Chen.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Marking Chen’s first museum solo exhibition, Rooms by the Sea brings her vibrant, contemporary view of Cape Cod into conversation with the work and legacies of Edward Hopper and Josephine Nivison Hopper.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
At the center of the exhibition is Chen’s large-scale double portrait Rooms by the Sea (2026), a direct tribute to Edward Hopper’s iconic 1951 painting of the same title and his Truro studio.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Chen has spent summers on Cape Cod for the past decade. What began as an annual getaway evolved into an immersive project, yielding nearly 40 canvases painted outdoors across Truro, Eastham and Provincetown. As a first-generation American artist, Chen explores this familiar landscape through questions of memory, belonging, assimilation and the American Dream.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
“Where Hopper’s Cape Cod is one of a quiet hum, Chen’s rumbles,” notes exhibition curator Indira A. Abiskaroon Valbuena.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Join us Saturday to meet Susan and celebrate this extraordinary new exhibition.⁣⁣

I’ve always had a complicated relationship with “never forget”—increasingly so as I fight to retain my own memories of 9/11 against the algorithm’s annual torrent of that day’s most agonizing footage.

I remember attending daycare in the North Tower when my father worked at Merrill Lynch some years prior.

I remember my third-grade teacher telling us the towers fell and a classmate crying more heavily than I’d ever seen anyone cry before. I remember my concern for whomever she knew who worked downtown and my own selfish relief that my parents didn’t.

I remember my father telling me years later that he spent that day driving strangers home to their families while hoping others were doing the same for ours.

I remember the names of three of the 343 firefighters who passed that day—Joseph Agnello, Lt. Brian Ahearn, Eric Allen—whose photos I wore behind my ID from sophomore to senior year of high school as part of a multi-year remembrance project.

I remember the first time I took a photo of the Tribute in Light from my parents’ old apartment and realized that countless insects flitter within their beams every night they shine.

I remember 2016–2020, living and then working in FiDi, wondering if I’d ever walk by the memorial without flashes of what used to be.

I remember my husband sharing with me that he had a clear view of lower Manhattan from his bedroom window, one of innumerable things that changed that day.

For all I remember there’s much I don’t.

When did the new skyline begin to feel so familiar? When did I start to use One World Trade as a marker for how close I am to home? When did the full memory of that day slip beyond my immediate grasp?

25 years is a long time to hold a collective memory so easily reshaped by the trauma in its wake.

I think often of what we really remember and what we hold for others. What archives preserve and what they transform over time.

What time holds and elides despite our best efforts to never forget.

August 2-31, 2026
Curated by Talia Shiroma

The background is out of focus, but just clear enough to perceive the shapes and colors on small screens above headphones, and a handful of prints in a grid, all on white walls, two permanent one temporary on wooden legs. The ground is gray and lived in, the way you expect from a hallway between artist studios. by @i_abiskaroon

05.2026 a long Memorial Day weekend in Philadelphia spent thinking about civics, the care of anticipating and exceeding needs, cross-industry lessons to inform museum-making, and collective yearning for a more stable future Fly Guy’s “I’m Gonna Git You Sucka” lights up a platform on which a metal stanchion keeps visitors from getting too close to the character’s outfit designed by Ruth Carter: a bright yellow, animal print fur trimmed suit and cape and aquarium platform boots. The words are so bright you can read their reflection on the floor. taken in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania by @i_abiskaroon
