Ephraim Wasse, Of A Body, digital photography
2025
.
Final days to visit Fragments of a Portrait at @artportlv , curated by @leviprom
.
Working primarily in photography, Ephraim Wasse explores the body as a site of memory, identity, and transformation. His images often emerge from a dialogue between personal experience and broader social realities, particularly those connected to the Ethiopian community in Israel.
.
Created during his recent residency in the United States, Of A Body continues Wasse’s ongoing investigation of the body as both subject and language. Through extreme proximity, fragmentation, and the dissolution of clear bodily boundaries, familiar forms become abstract signs that resist fixed interpretation. The body is no longer presented as a stable portrait, but as a shifting field of gestures, textures, and traces.
.
Using his own body as both material and subject, Wasse constructs a visual vocabulary that moves between presence and disappearance. Bathed in soft light and rendered through a highly diffused visual surface, the photographs hover between photography and drawing, documentation and imagination. In this space of ambiguity, Of A Body proposes a portrait that is not built through recognition, but through sensation, inviting viewers to encounter the body as something continually becoming.
.
Thank you to Artport to Levi Prombaum for this amazing opportunity.

Last week to see Fragments of a Portrait - and this week we turn our gaze to Of a Body, a work by Ephraim Wasse ~

In an exhibition that deals with portraiture, the gaze, and the ways in which identity is broken down into fragments of information, image, and surveillance, Wasse returns to the body itself - not as something whole or fixed, but as a place where memory, belonging, discrimination, movement, and light are inscribed.

In Of a Body, Wasse presents fragmented images of his own body in high-contrast black-and-white, as part of an effort to connect his personal experiences to the broader conditions of discrimination faced by the Ethiopian community in Israel. His self-portraits move between body and sign, between photograph and letter, between abstract image and an inner language formed through skin, pose, and light.

The work was created using three simple elements: the artist’s nude body, a camera with a strong black diffusion lens, and a room flooded with natural light. Out of this encounter emerge soft, mysterious, almost painterly images, in which the boundary between figure and ground begins to dissolve.

Within the exhibition, Wasse’s work reminds us that even when the portrait fragments, even when the body becomes abstract and almost disappears, it still carries testimony. Sometimes it is precisely through blur, through partiality, through what cannot be fully seen - that a new language of presence begins to appear.

Tomorrow at 12 pm - a guided tour of Fragments of a Portrait with exhibition curator Levi Prombaum, who will walk us through the ideas and questions that shape the exhibition ~
@leviprom

In a world where it seems increasingly impossible to simply be - without being seen, captured, measured, stored somewhere as data - the exhibition asks what happens to the portrait. What remains of it when the body becomes information, when the gaze becomes a system, and when the individual is broken down into fragments that can be tracked, quantified, and used to understand something about reality.

The works in the exhibition move between partial figures, disrupted gazes, mechanisms of vision, cameras, surveillance systems, and questions of intimacy, identity, and power. Out of all these, another kind of portrait begins to emerge - not of a single person, but of a shared reality: complex, networked, and at times, quite absurd.

Featuring: Rachel Anyo, Ephraim Wasse, Oren Ziv, Mushon Zer-Aviv, Nardeen Srouji, Laila Abd Elrazaq, and Ronit Porat.

And a small but important reminder: Fragments of a Portrait closes in three weeks, on May 30.
So if you haven’t had a chance to visit yet, or if you’d like to see it again through a slightly different lens - tomorrow is a very good opportunity.

Friday | May 8 | 12pm

There is a moment when a portrait no longer holds together. It fragments - into layers, into traces of data, into hints of presence.
Fragments of a Portrait unfolds within this moment - between body and information, between gaze and system, between what is seen and what is measured.

We're happy to invite you to the exhibition's official opening - this coming Thursday, April 16th, 8pm

The works in the exhibition operate through fragmentation - partial figures, dissolving bodies, fragments of identity that move between abstraction and representation. They draw on the long history of portraiture, while also deviating from it, proposing new ways of seeing, being seen, and understanding the self within a network of forces.

In a reality where vision is no longer solely human but also technological - both external and internalized - identity is continuously reshaped through surveillance. It is no longer only an external mechanism, but a state of mind. It permeates relationships, intimacies, and the ways we perform and imagine ourselves.

And from within this fragmentation, from within the partial - another portrait emerges. Not of an individual, but of a shared reality.

Of a Body - של הגוף
.
This series looks at the body through fragments.
Close frames and soft light dissolve the figure into partial forms.
.
What remains are traces of presence, pieces that belong to a body that is never fully revealed.
.
Currently on view in the exhibition Fragments of a Portrait
.

Fragments of a Portrait

This wall holds the last few months of my life in New Orleans.
.
Fragments of body, light, and space.
Moments that repeat, but never stay the same.
.
I keep returning to the same room, the same presence,
watching how small shifts create something new each time.
.
The grid looks stable,
but everything inside it is still moving.
