Tea Making as an exercise.
From the early years i remember women around the household always making tea, for the family and for the guests. Carrying pots of boiling water and reaching out to certain cups that were spread around the dastarkhan required agility and attention. I compared making tea to doing yoga and exercises. Where tea pots become gym weights. And women making work out/yoga poses to form harmonious symmetric patterns. by @iada__art

Interweaving Climate, Water(s) and Communities

Meruert Kunakova,
Ghosts of the Dead Sea, 2019
Cyanotype, textile, thread
Collection of International Art Development Association (IADA) @iada__art

The perception of nature from within a ghostly culture dissolving under the onslaught of modernity finds expression in Meruert Kunakova’s phantom prints, created using cyanotypes. One of the worst modern environmental disasters in Central Asia is the drying of the Aral Sea, a consequence of the Soviet project to redirect water flows for irrigation. This catastrophe is deeply connected to themes of identity and the ancient cultures of the regions bordering the Aral Sea, whose authentic way of life was documented in the famous ethnographic work commissioned by General Konstantin Kaufman, known as the Turkestan Album.

In Kunakova’s prints, the ghosts of an elusive culture are depicted as the ghosts of a vanished sea, printed on a textile cloth reminiscent of a patchwork quilt. The contours of the still-intact sea are embroidered with red thread. At the center of the composition, Kazakh writing appears. The text reads: Aq dalada tyrip kozimdi zhumsam kok tenizdi koremin, which translates as, Standing in the white desert, I close my eyes and see the blue sea.

Artist talk: qum.arna: «a method of learning rhythm and the unknowable»

Contemporary culture, especially music and art in Kazakhstan, is rapidly developing, revealing new trends and names. One of the brightest events of 2022 in Kazakhstan was the first biennale of sound and new music «Korkut»,uniting two parallel worlds - experimental music and decolonial discourse. IADA talked to qum.arna, a young composer from Pavlodar, for whom the «Korkut Sound» program was his debut performance. His methods of working with sound are close to the traditions of avant-garde music while maintaining a deliberately amateur approach. qum.arna writes compositions on his smartphone using recordings of various noises. The traditional Kazakh instrument “Kobyz”, one of the symbols of the «Korkyt-Ata» myth, was the basis of the electroacoustic performance qum.arna in collaboration with the kobyzshy (kobyz player) Satkozy Mukhtar. qum.arna controlled the prepared recording by improvising with the intensity and movement of sound on an 8-channel speaker system in the domed hall of the Museum of Folk Instruments in Almaty.

Huge congratulations dear Sara @punkorientalism with the publication of “Punk Orientalism: The Art of Rebellion” book👏👏👏
The long awaited book is now out!👏
IADA and Amal Bio @amalbio.kazakhstan is happy to support this publication💫

“This experimental & fractured book of artistic,
intellectual & cultural materials is tacitly punk in its
refusal. To borrow from punk theorist Cyrus Shahan,
Punk Orientalism is "[n]ot a story of the oppressed,
marginalized or persecuted minorities, a punk narrative
reveals instead an unwritten history of the middle".

Venti, aurae, anima - spirit of fluidity

November 23, 2022 - January 18, 2023

Foundry Downtown, Dubai

The exhibition at the @foundrydowntown includes an international board of artists from Kazakhstan, France, Sweden, and Iran will present a new perspective on the theme of flow and inspiration, addressing questions of metaphysics, and spirituality, this exhibition returns to fundamental questions about the Nature of life, the material world, and eidos, where the main metaphor is breath as a practice that embodies life. In an era of geopolitical turmoil in the world, this exhibition, in a way, serves as a space for healing, contemplating the beauty of coming together, sharing, and being united in grief.

Foundry is a hybrid progressive art space founded as a response to the evolving cultural scene in the UAE. The foundry’s innovative environment is a space for the possibility and provides Dubai’s community, and the global art scene, the opportunity to thrive, connect, communicate and exhibit.

«We only truly actualize when interacting with the Other; we spontaneously and inevitably attribute something inner to what is given to sense as outer. This ever-changing relentless flow of metaphoric “air” makes us feel alive. The exhibition sees its intention in overcoming the inertia of words regarding the hectic times we live in. We would rather prefer the aesthetic not to become an anaesthetic for reality and when we are mesmerized by it turn into callous solipsists. Art and beauty are not meant to be solely entertaining. Beauty is about hope. It has a unique force of restoring the will to live. To be distracted from one’s day-to-day existence by beauty is quite wrong, yet, to find a whole new level of involvement in the world through it - is right»
- curator Madina Sergazina.

Artist talk: AIGANA GALI

Curator Indira Dyussebayeva talks with the artist Aigana Gali about her practice and new series of work. Aigana Gali is a multidisciplinary artist based in London who works across a wide range of media, from canvas and paper to textiles and bronze, in a dynamic process guided by the essential character of each series. Gali was born on the crossing of the Great Silk Road in Almaty, Kazakhstan, to a Georgian, spending a formative year in between the two countries. This rich cultural heritage is an infinite source of inspiration for her work. Just as the Saka buried treasures in the endless plains of the steppe, Gali’s paintings are embedded with subtle historical or mythical references. After relocating to London, Gali explored the ways in which to communicate and translate her cultural background. Over the past decade, she has developed an important body of work delineated by series: Creation Myth, Steppe and Tengri. Each series represents a metaphorical chapter in her evolution as an artist and thinker, so Gali adapts both her technique and materials according to the series' unique, essential and abstracted schema.
