The perception of nature from within a ghostly culture dissolving under the onslaught of modernity finds expression in Meruert Kunakova’s phantom prints, created using cyanotypes. One of the worst modern environmental disasters in Central Asia is the drying of the Aral Sea, a consequence of the Soviet project to redirect water flows for irrigation. This catastrophe is deeply connected to themes of identity and the ancient cultures of the regions bordering the Aral Sea, whose authentic way of life was documented in the famous ethnographic work commissioned by General Konstantin Kaufman, known as the Turkestan Album.

In Kunakova’s prints, the ghosts of an elusive culture are depicted as the ghosts of a vanished sea, printed on a textile cloth reminiscent of a patchwork quilt. The contours of the still-intact sea are embroidered with red thread. At the center of the composition, Kazakh writing appears. The text reads: Aq dalada tyrip kozimdi zhumsam kok tenizdi koremin, which translates as, Standing in the white desert, I close my eyes and see the blue sea.

I’m thrilled to announce my next curatorial project, WHITE MILK PAINTS THE BLUE SKY with @lkham_gallery and the support of @iada__art, opening in Paris from October 14-26 during the city’s biggest art week of the year.

WHITE MILK PAINTS THE BLUE SKY features eight contemporary artists from or living in Mongolia. Their works provide new perspectives on art from a country that has thus far largely been known to the world through documentaries about nomadic life or the history of Chinggis Khan. They represent a young generation of Mongolians intimately attuned to not only their pasts and the present moment, but also to their future and their place within in.

The exhibition marks the first time that a Mongolian gallery has staged an exhibition of contemporary art at this scale abroad. The title evokes an ancient Mongolian practice of tossing milk towards the sky as a form of blessing, whenever crossing into a foreign land or embarking on a new journey or life phase.

It features works by artists whom I deeply admire: Baatarzorig Batjargal, Bekhbaatar Enkhtur, Chayodu, Nomin Bold, Nomin Zezegmaa, Nyam-Ochir Oyunpurev, Odonchimeg Davaadorj, and Zula Tuvshinbat.

Opening: 14, October 2023, from 17:00 to 22:00. It will be inaugurated by Nomin Chinbat, Minister of Culture, Mongolia, and Sebastièn Surun, Ambassador of France to Mongolia.

So happy to have this photo taken yesterday by @medina_diaries on my « Deep Excavation » installation inspired by our holy land of Mangistau. A place that gave me the power and confidence to deeply and totally accept myself. I will never be able of transmitting the beauty and the experience I had there.. but I can keep trying 🙂 as an artist.
