Hackensack Union Firefighters Honored at Bergen County 200 Club Awards On October 14, 2026, members of Hackensack Fire Department’s 2nd Platoon, representing Hackensack Fire IAFF Locals 2081 and 3172, were honored with the John R. Rinaldi Unit Citation Award at the Bergen County 200 Club’s J. Fletcher Creamer, Sr. Valor Awards. Firefighters Mike Rainville and Nicholas Webster were specifically recognized for their extraordinary courage and bravery earning them the Meritorious Service Award. This award with the Unit Citation was for a life-saving water rescue on January 6, 2026, when a vehicle plunged into the Hackensack River near the Court Street Bridge. Under the command of Deputy Chief Derevyanik, crews faced freezing water, darkness, and a rising tide to rescue a driver trapped inside the vehicle. Firefighters Rainville and Webster entered the frigid river to assist the victim, while crews worked together to safely bring the driver to shore for medical treatment. This incident demonstrated the courage, teamwork, and dedication of Hackensack’s firefighters. The successful rescue was also supported by specialized water rescue training completed in 2025 through a FEMA Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG). Shout out to the Englewood Firefighters and Fire Officers IAFF Locals for their Meritorious Service Award for a fire on March 6th 2026. Our Hackensack PBA members also received a Distinguished Service Award to Officers Angeles, Caneja, and Vicale for an incident on July 19th, 2026. Congratulations to all the members recognized for their heroic actions and commitment to saving lives! 25 YEARS LATER — NEVER FORGOTTEN 🇺🇸 September 11, 2001 changed our nation and our fire service forever. On the 25th anniversary, Hackensack Firefighters IAFF Local 2081 and Hackensack Fire Officers IAFF Local 3172 remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost, including the firefighters, police officers, EMS personnel, and civilians who never made it home. We also remember the first responders who answered the call in the days, weeks, and months that followed. Many Hackensack firefighters gave up their days off to stand alongside the FDNY in the rescue and recovery efforts. We especially remember our own Hackensack brothers who have since passed from illnesses related to their service: ▪️Lt. James Walker III— February 7, 2026 ▪️FF Rich Kubler — July 25, 2020 ▪️FF Dennis Walker — June 15, 2011 Their sacrifice will never be forgotten. 🇺🇸 We invite everyone to join us tomorrow, September 11, at 2:30 PM sharp at Fire Headquarters, 205 State Street, for the City of Hackensack’s 9/11 Ceremony. 25 years later, we remember. We honor. We never forget. Making Memories at MDA Summer Camp! On August 20th, members of Hackensack Firefighters IAFF Local 2081 proudly attended the 2026 MDA Summer Camp, alongside our brothers and sisters from Newark Fire Officer’s Union IAFF Local 1860 and Greenburgh Uniformed Firefighters Association - IAFF 1586. This year was especially meaningful for us because two of the campers, Grayson and Matthew, are the nephews of Hackensack Chief Rosazza. Both boys had an incredible time celebrating Firefighter Day at camp, and it made the day even more special for all of us! From face painting and decorating bananas before launching them across the field, to music, shaving cream battles, and water dunk challenges, the smiles never stopped! Every one of these special moments is made possible because of YOU and your generosity through our Fill the Boot campaigns. This year, Grayson and Matthew even got the chance to decorate our Fill the Boots, which we will proudly carry with us onto the streets as we continue fundraising for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. The MDA Summer Camp is completely free for MDA families and is one of only a few MDA Summer Camps in the country, and it’s right here in our backyard! There’s still time to make a difference! Help us continue supporting the Muscular Dystrophy Association by donating today. Every dollar helps send a child to camp, supports MDA families, and funds vital research toward treatments and cures. Thank you for helping us Fill the Boot and make a difference in the lives of so many families! 🇺🇸 17th Annual Timmy Rice Softball Game 🥎 Today, members of the Hackensack Fire Department and the Hackensack Police Department continued one of our cities greatest traditions as we took the field for the 17th Annual Timmy Rice Softball Game. We were honored to have Mayor Gaines throw out the ceremonial first pitch on the brand-new Turf Field #10, helping kick off another outstanding day of friendly competition and camaraderie. While the firefighters came away with a 13-7 victory in seven innings, the final score is never what this day is truly about. This annual tradition represents the incredible relationship between our firefighters and police officers—a bond built on mutual respect, teamwork, and professionalism. Whether we’re standing side by side on emergency scenes or sharing a laugh on the softball field, we are united by our commitment to serving the City of Hackensack. This year’s game was especially meaningful as we celebrated America’s 250th birthday, recognizing the freedoms we enjoy and the privilege of serving our community together. It was a fitting way to honor our nation’s history while continuing a tradition that brings our public safety family and community together year after year. Thank you to everyone who came out to support this great event. We look forward to continuing this tradition for many years to come. Congratulations to both teams on another outstanding game—and we’ll see everyone next year! On July 1st, retired Lieutenant Coyman was given the opportunity to speak with members of the 2nd Platoon about the Hackensack Ford Fire. As a firefighter who was there that day, he provided invaluable firsthand insight into the events of July 1, 1988, and shared the lessons learned from that tragic and fatal fire. Hearing directly from someone who experienced the incident offered our members a deeper understanding of the sacrifices made, the changes that resulted from the fire, and the importance of carrying those lessons forward in today’s fire service. We thank Lieutenant Coyman for taking the time to speak with us, for sharing his knowledge and experiences, and for helping us better understand the history of our department and the legacy of the firefighters we lost. July 1, 1988 – Honoring the Heroes of the Hackensack Ford Fire Today, we pause to remember the five members of the Hackensack Fire Department who made the ultimate sacrifice while battling the Hackensack Ford Fire on July 1, 1988 alarm #1177. 🕯 Captain Richard Williams
