It’s so easy as I step away from my different organisations to move away too far and maybe too quickly, thus not only losing touch with their realities but depriving our young team of the thoughts and actions that created the company that now provides their livelihood and is shaping their careers.

So, I decided to hang out with the team at Phillips HMO in Gbagada and spend time with “my people”. It was fun and actually rejuvenating. I think I got more from them than they did from me.

My message?
Our HMO is not an insurance company. It is an institution that creates access to health facilities with a responsibility to protect people’s lives by ensuring their health, well being, survival and peace of mind.

When people need help they are at their most vulnerable and they never forget how they’re treated when most desperate and our job is to be there for them at those moments.

So we must be a very dependable organisation and every Phillips HMO employee is a lifeline to someone’s good health. I talked a lot about internal value chains of excellence, where everyone is committed to serving each other in the company so well that external excellence to our clients is literally guaranteed.

I also stressed on the need to improve continuously by finding ways to be faster, more accurate, timely, relevant, whilst embracing technology (which I really applauded them for).

I guess my major message was on how they can all be a better version of themselves and appreciate that the quality of Phillips HMO is dependent 100% on the quality of each member of staff. I guess this applies to every organisation.

I reiterated my vision for PHMO. “ *To become a company that customers trust, Hospitals respect, Competitors admire and employees are proud to belong to*”.

I think that is a fair request? Now, we have to make it happen. Right?

Legacy, Institution-Building, and the Business of Healthcare

I was delighted to attend the Guild of Medical Directors’ 35th anniversary celebration.

Watching these medical pioneers receive well-deserved recognition left me with one primary thought: the importance of building institutions that outlive us.

Through strong governance, integrity, and determination, these leaders built hospitals under tough conditions, paving the way for future generations. Yet, many younger Nigerian doctors still face harsh working conditions and limited options, driving the ongoing “Japa” brain drain.
We must think differently about healthcare.

Much like agriculture, healthcare is not just a social service; it is a business that must operate sustainably to thrive—especially in developing economies with tight government budgets. Buildings alone do not deliver healthcare. Lasting medical institutions require a balance of infrastructure, clinical excellence, strong administration, technology, and sound financial management. Each depends on the others.

This is the Guild’s core strength: bringing private-sector discipline to healthcare without losing sight of its primary purpose—caring for people. Sustainable institutions must generate value to reinvest, grow, and continuously improve care.

Congratulations to the Guild on 35 years, and to the pioneers whose greatest legacy isn’t just the patients they treated, but the enduring institutions they leave behind. by @iam.fop

Standard Chartered Bank Nigeria Chairman duties on Saturday afternoon took me to the Classic Car Show at the Lagos Polo Club — a very welcome change of pace after a particularly busy week of Board meetings!

Standard Chartered has built what I believe is one of the strongest Wealth Management offerings in Nigeria, backed by significant investment in creating a banking experience that recognises just how important our Wealth Management and High Net Worth clients are.

Our sponsorship of the Classic Car Show was part of that experience.

It was quite a display, with some wonderful classic cars on show. The oldest was a 1953 Austin Morris — still running, with its beautifully aged and rusted body standing rather proudly amongst the more polished exhibits!

But beyond the cars, there is a larger point.

People who have worked hard to create and preserve wealth deserve a banking relationship that goes beyond transactions. They should enjoy distinctive experiences, thoughtful engagement and exceptional service. They deserve to be looked after — and, yes, occasionally pampered — with no apology!

Events such as this are part of the lifestyle experiences we want to create for our clients, and there will be many more opportunities to surprise, delight and demonstrate just how much we value those who entrust us with their banking relationships.

I am very proud to Chair such a great global franchise in Nigeria.

And as we say at Standard Chartered:

Here for good. by @iam.fop

I must confess that I have enjoyed raising my children. Definitely could have done better in some aspects but all in all I do not have any major regrets.

Being there for your children is so important and it is not mothers alone that’s should do “motherly” things with the kids. Your children must be prepared to maintain the values you show openly and discuss on the dining table.

There is always the risk of not acting the part you preach. Your children see who you are and can choose to ignore the things you do that is wrong and believe it’s okay because “daddy” does it e.g. your source of wealth.

Your children have become the barometer of the quality of your parenting or even fatherhood.

No one is perfect but we must do the best we can at all times because at the end of the day you pay the price.

Are employers asking too much from fresh graduates, or is the education system simply failing to prepare them for the modern workplace?

When employers demand practical skills, they are not raising the bar unreasonably ,the standard remains the same. However, the quality of training coming out of institutions has declined. We cannot blame young graduates for not knowing tools or software they were never taught. Instead, the responsibility falls on our educational institutions and educators to deliver market relevant quality.

Until the education system catches up, organizations will have to act as finishing schools by investing in internal training to bridge the gap between academic qualifications and real-world execution.

What is your take on the graduate skill gap in today’s job market?

I am currently in New York attending the side events during UNGA 81 (the United Nations General Assembly). On my way out of my hotel at the busy lobby President Macron of France saw me and commented on my bow -tie, which he proceeded to adjust for me and he took this selfie himself when I asked for a photo. “You look very distinguished sir” were his words as his security hustled him away. …just like that. Matching ties almost. Some of the best UNGA moments happen outside the meeting rooms.

Relaxing after a tough day with the Phillips crew.

Enjoying the city of New York outside of UNGA

Got to spend time with Taiwo Oyedele, the Coordinating Minister of the Economy who sat on the panel at the Phillips Consulting Breakfast session on “Doing business with the Nigerian Government” and the release of the revised Phillips 2026 State Perdormance Index (pSPI) during the side events at UNGA 81.

I was extremely pleased to see a huge turnout as Nigeria continued to be celebrated. Anything Nigeria was a full house. Phillips Consulting, your truly leading indigenous consulting and outsourcing company in Nigeria was there proudly holding our flag.*

Truly Nigerian and Proudly Nigerian.

Technology has always shifted the job market, and so my advice to young students and recent graduates, would be to focus on building the core skill sets that are necessary to use the technologies that businesses are adopting.

Secondly, try to get internships while you are still in university. It can be over the holidays or, if you have the time, during the semester. You learn a lot just by entering the system. In that process you see what the needs are, and look for opportunities and resources to build the skills that will address those needs.

Thirdly, be curious and proactive. There are many start ups and SMEs looking for entry level staff. If you make yourself useful by having the necessary skillsets, and are curious and willing to learn, that’s as good an entry point as any. The larger corporations might have fewer entry level roles, but there are many small businesses that could use your help.

Start early, learn quickly, and let the skills you build and the attitude you bring speak for you. At the end of the day any business owner just wants a diligent person that makes their life easier.

Looking back as a father, wisdom always comes clearest in hindsight.

If I could retrace my steps, there are three things I would approach differently: relaxing my overprotective instincts to let them navigate the world sooner, grounding our home deeper in shared spiritual traditions, and ensuring I passed down our mother tongue fluently.

Fatherhood is an evolving discipline. We do our absolute best with the knowledge we have, but the greatest gift we can offer the next generation is the humility to learn, adapt, and pass on those reflections.

To the parents in the room: what is one lesson your children have taught you along the way?

When choosing a partner for life, look past the fleeting spark and ask a deeper question: Are they your friend?

A lasting marriage is built on companionship. You want a partner who can navigate high-stakes decisions with you, but even more, you need a best friend—someone with whom you can share quiet silence, candid counsel, and genuine laughter.

Romance initiates the journey, but deep, unvarnished friendship is what sustains the marriage over decades. Choose the person you truly enjoy walking through life with.

In doing so, look into their home, the mother, the father, the siblings, cousins etc. not so much to see if you are going to get on with them, more to understand the life and environment he/she is coming from and therefore the impact of that influence in being your friend.
