Familiar. That’s the word.

This week @sonypictures hosted a dinner at @sohohouse to toast Academy Award–winning actor @thereginaking on the occasion of her new film #CaughtStealing (out today). The room was creative #BlackExcellence at its best.

Our host, @sidrasmith asked us to shout out the first time we saw Regina on screen. From my right, a high school friend @omarjdorsey belted a list of hits before @tiffanyhaddish shouted two more. The room bubbled with chatter.

I smiled, remembering Regina’s breakout role as Brenda Jenkins in the hit sitcom 227 — a teenage girl just as wild about boys as she was her studies. The theme song “There’s No Place Like Home” crooned in my subconscious as I thought of that tawny Washington, DC stoop, home to so many comical and poignant conversations. Despite our differences, I could see myself in Brenda — a curious Black teen filled with ambition and optimism in 1980s America.

The room had so much ❤️ for Regina. There were tears as she received that love and told us how it had anchored her through the loss of her son Ian. There was laughter as she talked about the grandeur of film and characters in the 90s. And there were reflections of the impact of her work on #TheCulture and the ways she conjures her people as she builds characters.

That’s when the word crystallized. Familiar. Regina feels enduringly familiar because she chooses, again and again, to be us — to reflect the humanity of our stories as Black folks on screen. Whether as Shirley, Sharon, Angela, Shalika, Marcee, or Trudy, she shows us versions of people we know, love, and aspire to be. As a director — Being Mary Jane, Scandal, This Is Us, One Night in Miami — she expands the narratives about people who look and live like us. Regina rides hard for us because she is us.

Being part of curating an experience that honored Regina is a career highlight. And a reminder of my purpose: to create spaces where people see & feel reflections of themselves - complex, flawed, and beautifully human. Centering kindredness, connection, safety, and celebration, we moved out of that room transformed — radiating love and care.

#tobeornottobe

Remember in kindergarten, when the teacher went around the class quizzing - “What do you want to be when you grow up?”….

My answers varied depending on the Saturday morning cartoon lineup and whatever book I was reading. I manifested everything from Wonder Woman to an astronaut. 🦸🏽‍♂️👨🏾‍🚀

Today, nearly grown up, my answer is unwavering. It is unequivocal. It is personal. I want to be kind.

What about you?

Have a brilliant one beloveds. ✨ by @iamchrisglass

A beloved colleague stopped me yesterday to share that they still refer to tips I gave them years ago when navigating tough situations. It stoked my ego and warmed my heart - but more than anything, it humbled me.

What stayed with me wasn’t just the power we have as leaders to share knowledge - but the lasting impact of showing care as humans.

Here’s to the way you make the world better today for someone else’s tomorrow.

Pride: The Power of Our Presence.

We believe that everyone who is a part of the Native Son community of Black gay/queer men are powerful simply because we exist.

We live at the intersection of our Blackness and our Queerness. We survive, we thrive, we dream, we reimagine, we resist, and we do it all with creativity, excellence, and flair. That is power.

Our visibility is our superpower.

Thank you to all the Native Sons who showed up and shared their visibility with us this Pride season.

One day we’ll tire of mourning that rose bushes have thorns. Instead we will delight that thorny bushes render roses. That day is today. 🌹 by @iamchrisglass

Pride: The Power of Our Presence.

“Visibility means access to me. It is those moments when the fog lifts, doors open, walls crumble — and endless possibilities lie ahead. When we remedy invisibility, our ancestors wildest dreams take flight.” — @herrglass

Last week, on a balmy Miami evening — under the masterful direction of @sidrasmithofficial — we gathered to celebrate the American Black Film Festival and a host of creative change-makers. Chief among them were the festival’s founders, Jeff and Nicole Friday, alongside the incomparable Larenz Tate.

The space was filled with Black excellence — storytellers, trailblazers, old friends, new friends. The music crooned, the mic was passed — adoration and accolades flowing freely. Libations thanks to @ms_ibest and @ibestwines followed by high fives and tight hugs. Food was shared as laughter rose into the night sky — and then it rained.

And Black folx did what Black folx do — #WineOutOfWater

Some stood in the rain and laughed, others huddled close and sang. It was a karaoke for the books. And a reminder of how far we’ve come, along with the power of community in pushing culture forward.

In a time when the world is at war, and the familiar face of bigotry haunts every corner, moments like these are, in fact, acts of rebellion. The very powers that would rob us of joy stand shocked by our audacity and resilience. As the heavens opened that night, I imagined the ancestors weeping wet, joyful tears — to cleanse us, to polish us, to ready us for the enduring road ahead. As the church folks say - weeping may endure for a night, but JOY comes in the morning. Amen? Amen.

These moments also remind me of my own purpose — to create transformative experiences that increase access and opportunity for those traditionally left out.

Huge thanks to the team at #sohobeachhouse for your stunning hospitality, and to @carolsdaughter @myblockskin @drsummerallen @chicknjones for your generosity and to @hervemompoint and @ramzydabeast for the brilliant shots.

Here’s to Black brilliance, legacy in motion, and the spaces that hold us.

Happy Juneteenth y’all!
