Winter has looked different than I expected.

It looked like record-breaking snow in Charlotte.
Like Alaska skies putting on intimate dance recitals that don’t feel real.
Like beachside conferences and new coworkers turning into real people.
Like rescue dogs with muddy paws and Charlie stepping into snow for the first time.

It looked like slowing down on purpose.
Learning my rhythms.
Exploring food as medicine, old remedies, and new routines.

Nothing dramatic.

My big sister turns 40 today.

I’ve only been around for 35 of those years and no photo or words could do them justice, but I’ll try.

When I look at Katie, I see a person who gives more than she gets, loves harder than most, and somehow still manages to be everyone’s safe place.

I might not be your best friend, but you’re mine (and I’m confident I at least made your top ten).

To the person I trust with literally everything, happy birthday.

This morning was so special.

I’ve missed peak fall on the Blue Ridge Parkway for two years in a row, but not this time.

One month together, it’s time to give this girl a proper introduction. Everyone meet Charlie.

In my head, a cat would be an easy-going companion that would be highly independent.

In my reality, she yells for attention all day, is quirky and nosey, must be on camera during my meetings, has a feather fetish, and doesn’t let me work past 6PM.

Norway, you are breathtaking. I never thought I’d lose count of waterfalls, put my feet in a glacier lake, or love so many sheep from a safe distance.

Some know that I am terrified of flying, which is ironic in my family. Every flying day is my personal hell filled with tears and panic attacks until takeoff. But trips with @acoucke are different. She brings strangers together that leave as family and trusting in that is enough to get on the plane every time.

I am thankful, grateful, and forever altered by these irreplaceable humans.

My favorite kind of people are those that live their most authentic life, and we lost one of the best last week. Uncle Dale did everything big - he had the biggest laugh, always listened, loved out loud, and had the greatest pride in his family. It’s hard to grasp that I won’t get another call about a Charlotte restaurant on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. But most of all, I will miss the love and acceptance I felt any time we talked.
