Last weekend I was honored to be amongst the performing cast for Sacred Spaces Created by @matthewrushing73 and @duboisakeen as part of the @dukearts event in Durham, NC.

I sit in reflection of the power of art, dance, movement, music, melodies, and spiritual energy that each of the performers brought, fostered by the brilliance of the artistic directors, collaborators, and all their generosity.

As a teacher who has engaged with primary and secondary school students, I have slowly noticed a lack of awareness or erasure of Alvin Ailey and his company from mainstream knowledge in the youth. Some have never heard his name before or the names of his work, with the most prominent one being "Revelations". As a certified Horton Teacher from the Ailey School, I use these as teaching moments to fill the gaps, and enmesh the history with the movement. But one must also reason with the new dance era we are also living in. Revelations may not enter the hearts of the youth the way it did when we were younger. Different times. Different measures. Different generational cultures desire different input/ output.

This is why Sacred Spaces is so special. It brings the essence of Revelations back to the forefront but in an immersive way that modern eyes, ears, and auras can connect with instantly. To watch Matthew's solo and Du'Bois embody the band's music with the exquisite singers, you had no choice but to be moved. It washed deep feelings over the audience and us dancers backstage as we waited for our cue to step into the light to offer our dancing bodies as well.

I sit in awe that I was able to be part of this new history of Sacred Spaces as it sits closely beside the older history of Alvin Ailey's Revelations, creating a bridge through time the can support the continued transfer of knowledge and meet the audiences exactly where they are.

I linger in these memories...with an amazing cast, under important leadership who continue to choose to invest in us, the community. I thank you for a once in a lifetime experience that will be cherished always.

I choose to stay in this moment, and you are welcome to join me! by @iamjasminepowell

#29 Art often speaks for itself, @iamjasminepowell

And though that’s true, I’m still going to write out this caption. During the Make Moore Moves shoot, I got to watch multiple amazing performances. However this one stood out to me. @iamjasminepowell gave agency to the audience by handing 6 audience members a red ribbon, which she held the other end to. She then began he performance, and danced and maneuvered around the stage slowly recapturing the agency she gave out. It was incredible, it was improvised, and I’m so glad I was able to capture it. Absolute Art.

What started as a seed planted after dancing for years in New York City and having the courage to put my own voice forward. Moving Spirits, Inc. celebrates 15 years of honoring who we are, our lineages, and strength.

As the High Priestess of Black Classical Music, Nina Simone, shared, "You can't help it. An artist's duty, as far as I'm concerned, is to reflect the times." That is the work. Moving Spirits' works, reflect the times as we live now, and retells true, forgotten and misinformed histories of the times of our ancestors.

Make Moore Moves moments I’ll never forget!

📸: @hamptonfrostmedia thank you for capturing the essence of every one of our amazing collaborating artists!!

Most of the choreographers and dancers met on the day of the show 🫪 during dress rehearsal. And the incredible thing about dancers is we each knew how to show up, do our parts, and together (without ever really going through a proper “practice” of any of it) we made our show come together…quite nicely might I add!

The #supportive nature of this group of artists, the #inclusive environment we collectively managed, and the #welcoming embrace from West Southern Pines Cultural Center proved that #collaborative arts events make us stronger as a community. Connections were made. New friendships formed. And together, we shared in the experience of truly being *with* one another.

Want to see more collaborations in the community? Make a gift today to The Artist Fund, avec Productions’ dedicated effort to compensate artists for their time and expertise. The artistry and skill it takes to #worktogether to produce a show like this costs research, training and artistry made possible by the talented people who dedicated their lives to creating and sharing their stories.
