“In Duke’s one-of-a-kind, two-year terminal degree program, you will:

-Expand your choreographic systems to consider how dance is not only a means of expression, but a rigorous form of knowledge-making, creativity, and social change.

-Work closely with seasoned, artistically- and academically-active faculty to situate your movement practice within a greater thesis project.

-Participate in academic discourse with your peers to consider other forms, traditions, methodologies, and creative processes.

-Receive resources, guidance, and funding to pursue your interdisciplinary choreographies.

-and more!

I was invited into a room that is special.

This past week I had the opportunity to join the incredible dancers of @ktcollective during rehearsal as they prepared for their upcoming Masquerade Gala.

What many people don’t see is that behind every performance are hours of rehearsal, choreography, creativity, and dedication.

As funding for the arts continues to become more limited, organizations like KT Collective rely on community support to continue creating opportunities for dancers, choreographers, and future generations of artists.

✨ If you’re in the Durham area, I’d love for you to join me as I attend KT COLLECTIVE'S inaugural Masquerade Gala on August 29. (Link is in their bio)

If you aren’t able to attend, you can still make a difference by:
• Sharing this post or their page
• Tagging a friend who loves the arts
• Supporting KT Collective in whatever way you can

I’ll be there, and I hope to see some familiar faces!

A heartfelt thank you to @sweetfire28 , founder of KT Collective Dance Company, for welcoming me into rehearsal and allowing me to experience a small part of the incredible work happening behind the scenes.

And to every dancer (@mgnross @iamjasminepowell @ashachinny_ @trissmatthews ) thank you for your warmth, your kindness, and for inviting me into your creative space. It was such a joy learning alongside you, and I can’t wait to cheer you all on at the gala.

See you August 29. 🖤✨

#29 Art often speaks for itself, @iamjasminepowell
•••
And though that’s true, I’m still going to write out this caption. During the Make Moore Moves shoot, I got to watch multiple amazing performances. However this one stood out to me. @iamjasminepowell gave agency to the audience by handing 6 audience members a red ribbon, which she held the other end to. She then began he performance, and danced and maneuvered around the stage slowly recapturing the agency she gave out. It was incredible, it was improvised, and I’m so glad I was able to capture it. Absolute Art.

What started as a seed planted after dancing for years in New York City and having the courage to put my own voice forward. Moving Spirits, Inc. celebrates 15 years of honoring who we are, our lineages, and strength.

As the High Priestess of Black Classical Music, Nina Simone, shared, "You can't help it. An artist's duty, as far as I'm concerned, is to reflect the times." That is the work. Moving Spirits' works, reflect the times as we live now, and retells true, forgotten and misinformed histories of the times of our ancestors.
