A few years ago now, I had the chance to do a story with Steve Potts and Charlie Cunningham. I stayed with Steve in Inverness, where his workshop overlooked the back end of Tomales Bay where the San Andreas drops into the sea. He sent me on a ride with a hand-written map and a guaranteed tailwind. Then we drove over to Fairfax to visit Charlie at his workshop.

Charlie was one of mountain biking’s original innovators and dreamers and down a precipitous ladder in the basement sat some of the drop-bar off-road machines he built. Potts described his long-time friend as a “human CNC machine” and throughout Charlie’s workshop, the evidence of his creativity had accumulated. It was a wonderland for a bike nerd like me and I’m grateful for our trajectories intersected ever so briefly.

I loved working on this little Central Coast road trip story for my friends over @wildsam ☀️

The Central Coast is a pretty magical place and it was a joy to explore a piece of it. I talked to an oyster farmer, saw a few otters, and as always, drank far too much coffee.
