Exposing surfing’s hidden links to ‘Cancer Alley’, the impact of Neoprene production and the natural alternative that literally grows on trees, we explore the power we have as individuals to effect change.

While CMO @xcelwetsuits @ianstewart__ called The Big Sea “The film that changed an industry,” so we’re incredibly proud to have Ian MC the screening.

Through the lens of surfing, the film explores wider environmental and social issues combing beautiful surf cinematography with lived experiences from activists in Cancer Alley as well as insights from the likes of @Surfrider CEO @chadnelsen @surfersagainstsewage cofounder @chrishinessurfs MBE @patagonia_surf product line manager @hubhubbard writers, cultural commentators & former pro surfers @jamiebrisick Dave Rastovitch and @theseakin big wave pioneer and chemistry professor @sgerhardtscruz, @theseea founder @amanda_seea @finisterre founder @tomkay7 and more

Get ready for the smell of fresh ink and 116 pages of lovingly curated inspiration, as Issue 15.3 is coming in for a landing in your mailbox soon.

As always, our third edition of the year is devoted to “progression”—a malleable concept interpreted through the eyes of each beholder. Whether you’re trying to land your first backflip or simply looking for new friends to ride trails with, the common denominators of all progression are determination and hope.

On the overachieving and aspirational end of the spectrum, we chronicle the short but meteoric career of German slopestyler Patricia Druwen, who at 17 years old—and only four years into riding bikes on dirt—has become one of the world’s most boundary-breaking female slopestyle athletes.

Need some inspiration? Our feature on elite female race mechanics has it in spades. Photographer and writer Anne Keller documents the hard-won achievements of World Cup mechanics Paige Stuart and Andi Zolton, who are blazing a brilliant path for women in a vital profession that is still primarily the domain of men.

Underscoring the beauty of ambitious whimsy, Dillon Osleger writes about an enthusiastic mission to rack up nearly 36,000 feet of descending in a single day—a Type-A shuttler’s version of “Everesting.” Aptly described as “Mariana Trenching,” the quest to descend the equivalent of the deepest oceanic trench on Earth turns out to be anything but easy, and a questionable idea of fun.

Huge congrats to photographer Anthony Smith for scoring his first Freehub cover with an image of multidisciplinary endurance racer Keegan Swenson hammering through the saguaro-filled hills around Tucson, Arizona during one of his routinely masochistic training sessions. In the story behind this cover, Brett Rothmeyer delves into the unrelenting mindset that has buttressed Swenson’s extraordinary successes.
