I’ve spent years writing from places of survival.

This time, I wrote from a place of light.

This freestyle is about vulnerability, connection, and allowing someone else’s light to awaken your own.

Sometimes the greatest healing isn’t found in being rescued—it’s found in finally believing you’re worthy of being seen.

This freestyle poem was inspired by a moment of simply allowing myself to be seen, to receive joy, and to embrace a softer side of who I am.

Juneteenth reminds me that freedom isn’t just historical. Sometimes freedom is leaving what broke you, healing what tried to destroy you, and becoming who you were always meant to be. Freedom means something different when you’ve had to fight for it.

As a survivor, mother, creator, and woman rebuilding her life from the ashes, Juneteenth reminds me that freedom isn’t only about where we’ve come from—it’s about who we choose to become.

Freedom is healing.
Freedom is choosing yourself.
Freedom is breaking cycles.
Freedom is creating art from your wounds.
Freedom is refusing to stay where pain left you.

Today I celebrate resilience.
I celebrate growth.
I celebrate every version of me that survived so this version could thrive.

Thirteen years without heels… BABY, LOOK AT ME NOW.

The dress is giving. The heels are heel-ing. And the woman wearing them? She’s having a MOMENT.

I’m talking sexy, confident, liberated, and very much in my feminine energy.

But here’s what I’m learning: growth isn’t always serious. Sometimes it’s a little black dress, a little flirtation, a little extra sauce, and finally allowing yourself to ENJOY YOU.

After everything life has brought my way, I’m making room for more than being strong. I’m making room for pleasure, playfulness, softness, confidence, and experiences that remind me how good it feels to be alive.

Ladies, please don’t get so caught up in becoming that you forget to enjoy the woman you’re becoming.

Wear the dress. Take the trip. Dance a little harder. Explore the parts of yourself you’ve kept tucked away. Let yourself be seen. And stop waiting for permission to feel good in your own skin.

You can be a work in progress AND a whole vibe at the same time.

I’m not just becoming her. I’m enjoying her, too. And baby, she looks GOOD on me.

Sometimes you just have to let yourself PLAY. 🧚🏽‍♀️✨

This weekend, I got to step completely outside of the box and become a fairy for the day.

And yes… I made my own costume. 😂

We dressed as fairies in honor of a beautiful friend who transitioned and was deeply into cosplay. It was such a beautiful way to celebrate their love for creativity, imagination, and becoming whoever you want to be.

A little fairy magic, a little creativity, and a WHOLE lot of fun. 🧚🏽‍♀️✨

Made my own costume and stepped right into my fairy era.

For me Sometimes I like to dress up, be silly, laugh, dance, and enjoy the moment.

There are many sides to Oyemi, and this is one of them.

Just me, being me, and having a good time. 💜

No deep lesson.
No fixing.
No explaining.

Just me laughing, creating, dressing up, interacting, and fully embracing my magical energy. 🧚🏽‍♀️

There are so many sides to who we are.

I keep making room for all of mine. My appreciation to those who see my growth even when I overlooked it. 🫂🫶🏽

Some people leave this world, but the joy they brought into ours never quite leaves.

Grief is complex no matter the time passing.

But memories? Those I hold close.

You were the reason I got to be a fairy, MYSELF, and I will forever smile at that memory. Your genuine grace, your spirit, the way you embraced people and allowed them to simply be themselves.

Sometimes we don’t realize how much someone has added to our lives until we’re left holding the memories.

So here’s to loving people while they’re here. To celebrating their uniqueness. To being unapologetically yourself and allowing others the same freedom.

Love loudly. Laugh often. Be kind. Be you. Be love.

Because sometimes, the smallest moments become the memories we carry forever.

Sometimes, when you’re in survival mode, you overlook the people who are actually giving you space to be yourself.

I came across a video from years ago and realized I had overlooked someone who accepted me exactly as I was.

My shenanigans. 😂
My personality.
My way of being.

She never made me feel like I had to perform, explain, shrink, or become someone else.

And now I understand something I didn’t understand back then.

The people who allow you to be fully yourself are valuable.

I won’t overlook that again.

Be surrounded by people who truly allow you to shine.

In your authenticity.

They maximize you.
They don’t minimize you.

Because authenticity isn’t a performance.

It’s being free enough to be YOU.

Not everything has to be deep.

My new fun is putting on fairy ears, some merengue, and dance. 😂🧚🏾‍♀️

Just me moving, smiling, trying something new, and having FUN.

Merengue is fast and I LOVE that music is FAST 😂 that’s really what this moment was about.

I had to be honest with myself.

I was overlooking my own wins. Overlooking my accomplishments. Overlooking myself.

Sometimes I was minimizing who I was so I could fit into spaces and groups where, truthfully, I was never meant to blend in.

I’m not doing that anymore.

And I’m also learning that healing isn’t only about recognizing where people hurt you. Sometimes it’s recognizing the people who are standing right in front of you, genuinely wanting to see you win.

When you’ve been hurt, receiving support can feel unfamiliar.

So I’m learning.

I’m learning to see myself.
To celebrate myself.
To trust myself.
To receive genuine community.
And to stop confusing being private with being invisible.

I went on a walk recently and didn’t post it.

Not because it wasn’t significant.

Because it was.

Some wins don’t need an audience.

Some milestones are for you.

And I have a lot more wins than what you see on this screen.

I’m just not posting everything.

I’m living it.

Yo creo en la unidad entre la comunidad negra y latina porque cuando nuestras comunidades se conectan, se apoyan y trabajan juntas, podemos llegar mucho más lejos.

¿Qué pasa cuando dejamos de permitir que el miedo y la división nos mantengan separados?

En este video hablo en español sobre la importancia de que las comunidades negras y latinas se conecten, se apoyen y aprendan unas de otras.

No tenemos que venir del mismo país.
No tenemos que hablar el mismo idioma.
No tenemos que tener la misma cultura.

Podemos ser diferentes y aun así construir juntos.

También hablo sobre cómo las narrativas de los medios y el miedo pueden impedirnos conocer a las personas que podrían convertirse en aliados, amigos, colaboradores y parte de nuestra comunidad.

Mi español no es perfecto, pero eso no me impide intentar conectar.

La división no nos lleva más lejos. La inclusión gana.

Ahora conectemos.

What happens when we stop allowing fear and division to keep us separated?

In this video, I speak in Spanish about the importance of Black and Latino communities connecting, supporting one another, and learning from each other.

We don’t have to come from the same country.
We don’t have to speak the same language.
We don’t have to share the same culture.

We can be different and still build together.

I also talk about how media narratives and fear can prevent us from getting to know people who could become allies, friends, collaborators, and part of our community.

My Spanish isn’t perfect, but that doesn’t stop me from trying to connect.

Division doesn’t move us forward. Inclusion wins.
