People don't see you.
They interpret you.

Long before you introduce yourself...
Long before you share your credentials...
Long before you prove you're qualified...

People are already asking themselves questions they may not even realize they're asking.

Can I trust this person?
Do they belong here?
Are they credible?
Do they inspire confidence?

For years, I thought I was in the business of teaching makeup.

Working in television and film taught me something different.

Every hairstyle...
Every wardrobe choice...
Every makeup application...
Every lighting decision...
helps tell the audience who a character is before they ever speak.

Then one day it hit me.

The boardroom isn't any different.

Neither is Zoom.
Neither is LinkedIn.
Neither is your website.

Whether you're a founder, physician, attorney, executive, speaker, or entrepreneur, your appearance is already communicating something.

The question isn't whether people are judging.
The question is whether your appearance is communicating what you intend.

That's why I don't teach makeup.
I teach intentional visual communication.

Because makeup changes faces.
Perception changes lives.

If this carousel made you think differently about the relationship between appearance and opportunity, I'd love to hear what resonated with you most.

And if you've ever wondered what your appearance is communicating before you say a word...

Leave "AUDIT" in the comments.

Over the next few days, I'll choose a few people for a complimentary 15-minute Visibility Audit, where I'll show you the visual signals you may not even realize you're sending.

I'm excited to read your thoughts.

— Trevis Brown A luxury editorial Instagram carousel by professional television and film makeup artist Trevis Brown exploring the psychology of first impressions, executive presence, personal branding, and visual communication. Through minimalist black, white, and blush typography, the carousel explains how appearance influences perception before we speak. Topics include confidence, leadership presence, personal image, visibility, professional makeup, career advancement, and intentional visual communication for executives, entrepreneurs, founders, attorneys, physicians, speakers, and professionals. The carousel ends with an interactive prompt inviting viewers to reflect on how appearance shapes opportunities and perception in business and everyday life. by @iamtrevisbrown

What I wore to see Beyoncé Part 1: London

I am in London experiencing where dreams meet reality at Club Renaissance, I embarked on a journey across the pond to witness the unparalleled talent of Beyoncé. ✨✨✨

Clad in a mesmerizing blue mesh top from the Mugler/HM collection, adorned with blue jewels, I transformed into a muse of lusty punk aesthetics, adorning myself for the Queen.

My makeup became a work of art, with a daring smokey eye adorned with a captivating pop of blue, while my flushed glossed lips added a touch of sensuality. The atmosphere was electric, and my ensemble exuded the essence of the night. This, my friends, was a moment..... 🎶✨🇬🇧

The white liner against her skin? Still thinking about it. 🤌🏾

One of my favorite makeup looks I created on @aliyahsinterlude for English Teacher, Season 2.

That crisp white wing against her rich skin tone was everything. Paired with the deep lip, it gave her eyes their own moment—and with Aliyah’s energy, the whole look came alive.

This is why I love playing with contrast. One thoughtfully placed detail can command your attention.

The liner understood the assignment, boo. 😂

Makeup by me, Trevis Brown...

You can love a makeup look and still wonder, “Would I feel like myself wearing it?”

Boo, that’s a useful question.

Before you try to recreate your next saved look, name the detail you’re drawn to. Maybe it’s the softly defined eyes or the way the skin catches the light. Start there. That one detail can become part of your signature.

As an Atlanta makeup artist, I help you connect what inspires you with what feels authentic on your face.

That’s Intentional Visual Communication: choosing how you want to express yourself, then learning how to bring it to life.

In my private makeup lessons in Atlanta, we create a look around your features, your routine, and your personal style. You leave knowing what to use, where to place it, and how to recreate it with confidence.

As an Atlanta makeup artist, my first question is: how do you want to show up?

For this look, luminous skin, a defined eye, and a rich lip carry the same intention as the tailoring and statement earrings: sexy, assured, deliberate.

That’s Intentional Visual Communication. Choosing how you express yourself—and giving those choices a direction.

Try this the next time you get ready: choose three words for how you want to feel. Let them guide your makeup, your clothes, and your accessories.

In my private makeup lessons in Atlanta, we turn that intention into techniques you can use at your own mirror. Learn to create a signature look that feels like you—and recreate it with confidence.

I lLOVE myself too much to keep editing out the parts that make me interesting.

The softness. The sexiness. The little bit of drama.

Getting dressed is one way I give those parts of me room to live.

The gag is, I feel most like myself when I let them show. 🖤

What part of yourself are you giving more room to lately?

There are moments when beauty becomes more than a product. It becomes a reminder of purpose, resilience, and the people behind the artistry.

Carol Rasheed gifted me her new collection, and before I even opened it, these words stood out:
I AM RESILIENT.
I AM HOPE.
I AM INSPIRATION.

Those words feel like a reflection of the woman behind the brand. Carol has dedicated her career to artistry, excellence, and pouring into others, and it’s beautiful to see that same intention reflected in her own beauty line.

Congratulations, @carol_rasheed I’m proud to support you and excited to watch Carol Rasheed Beauty continue to grow. ❤️ taken in Atlanta, Georgia by @iamtrevisbrown

The same face can tell completely different stories.

That's the part of makeup that has always fascinated me.
Before I think about foundation, eyeshadow, or lipstick, I think about purpose.

Who does this person need to embody in this moment?
Every decision becomes intentional.

The skin.
The finish.
The texture.
The balance.
The emotion.

Because makeup isn't just about creating a beautiful face.
It's about creating visual alignment between who someone is and what they want the world to experience.

Whether I'm working in television, film, editorial, or on a commercial campaign, my goal is always the same:
To tell the story before a single word is spoken.

That's what I mean by Intentional Visual Communication.
The most powerful transformation isn't becoming someone else.

It's revealing who you've been all along.
What story do you think each image tells?

Before I picked up a makeup brush, I asked one question.

Who does she need to become in this moment?

Because makeup is never just about changing how someone looks.

It's about understanding what they need to communicate.

Confidence.
Strength.
Softness.
Power.
Freedom.

For this shoot, the goal wasn't to create a different person.

I was creating a VIBE.

My job was to create the visual language that revealed her.

Every decision had a purpose.

The skin.
The eyes.
The balance.
The finish.

Nothing was random.

Because the most powerful images aren't created when someone simply looks beautiful.

They're created when the outside finally aligns with the story they want to tell.

That is Intentional Visual Communication.

You don't start with lipstick.

You start with identity.

You changed outfits three times.

Not because you cared about the clothes.

Because you cared about what they meant.

You stood there holding two blazers, wondering which version of yourself would walk into that interview.

The experienced leader.
The approachable manager.
The confident executive.

You weren't asking,
"Which jacket do I like?"

You were asking,
"Who will they believe I am?"

Most people think that moment is about fashion.

It isn't.
It's about communication.

You've been communicating visually your entire life.

Before interviews.
Before first dates.
Before presentations.
Before networking events.
Before every moment that mattered.

The only thing you were missing was a name for it.

I call it Intentional Visual Communication.

Not changing who you are.
Making sure people can see who you already are.

What's one moment where you realized your appearance mattered before you ever spoke? by @iamtrevisbrown
