When was the last time you elevated your artistry?

This may come as a surprise, but the pandemic was a blessing for me. Instead of being sad that I was stuck in the house, I used my time to create and to grow.

This shoot was special for me. I got a chance to work with not one, but two dope models and as always Mr. Adams never disappoints when he’s behind a camera.

During the shoot, I was in awwww of the energy in the room. I knew that we were creating magic. I also saw the Trevis touch begin to transform into what it is now.... if you don’t know the Trevis touch is all about technique. It’s not about trying to turn a girl into someone else. It’s about using makeup to enhance ones natural beauty.

#trevistip for Black and White Photos:

1.) A classic trick is to use a blue based red lipstick, it will look more “natural” lip in a black and white photo.

2.) All Matte Everything: use a matte foundation and a matte highlighter. Black and white photography is all about a manipulation of light and shadow so you don’t want to use makeup that will reflect light. (Also no SPF!!!!)

3.) Use neutral matte shadows to create the eye shape you want.

Most importantly take your time and really be careful when it comes to technique. Black and White photos will show every mistake a makeup artist makes so take your time and remember... when in doubt blend it out!!!!!

What taught you patience?

I’m a Capricorn, I like to control things. I can’t help it. I orchestrate my life and sometimes the lives of people around me, lol.

I’m learning something new.... PATIENCE

It’s a skill at almost 35 I should have learned all ready but it is what it is. I’m not on anyone’s time line on my journey.

I decided to surrender to you the universe and it’s process, I decided to allow myself to be happy and abundant. I decided to be open to more than I asked for. I was ready for all that.... but because of doing those things I’m now learning something new...patience.

I have faith in the process so now I have to be patient. I’ve planted my seeds, so now it’s time to nurture them and allow them to grow in their own divine time.

Speaking of patience.... here’s an artistry tip:

Slow down when doing your makeup. Great makeup is all about technique and placement. Makeup is nothing but a manipulation of light and shadow.... so slow down and take your time. Doing your makeup shouldn’t feel like a speed contest every morning. This might sound harsh, but it’s real... if you apply your makeup in a rushed manor, your face is going to look rushed. We can all tell the girls that do their eye liner at the red light on the way to work. Don’t be that girl... we talk about that girl. 💥Backstory:

I first saw this model about a year ago on IG. As an artist I instantly fell in love with her face. Have you seen her cheekbones?

We both wanted to work with each other but originally the timing was off. Our schedules didn’t match, and I had to find the right photographer to capture my vision do her.

FINALLY, the stars lined up and we finally got the opportunity to work together. When I was filming behind the scenes footage I knew we were creating magic. I was looking at the monitor thinking, she didn’t even need to be retouched.... this is so good. Even my iPhone pictures looked amazing.

Fast forward a few months later some of the images were featured in @goji.magazine

I’m so humbled as an artist when I create just for the sake of creating and it’s so well received :-)

Artistry Tips:
I wanted her skin to glow from within. To achieve this vibe it starts with prepping the skin with products that will illuminate through foundation:-)

At this point we all know I’m a major #narsissist right????? But I used one of my favorite @narsissist products to create this look. Tinted Glow Booster in the color Simos, was used to give her skin this beautiful glowing vibe before I added on the rest of her makeup. :-)

I’m at a point in my career where I understand my worth and my talent. I have a whole book, unless you’re working on an editorial for Harper’s Bazaar or Vogue US or a major campaign for a fashion house. I’m just not interested in assisting..... especially if you ain’t paying me.... because I know my worth.

I understand the role of an assistant in this game. It’s to learn from someone who is at a level you’re trying to get too. There should be an exchange of knowledge. You should leave that assisting gig with more than you came in with. I don’t need practice painting faces. I did that at @maccosmetics

Not every opportunity deserves a yes. You have to think does this align with my values? Will this advance my career? Will I gain knowledge? Will my network expand? Is this worth my time? These are questions you have to ask yourself.

This message is specifically for the new makeup artist, or the new beauty content creator... or any business owner struggling with the decision of prices. REAL TALK, the only thing in life consistent is CHANGE.

Everyday is a journey and you are supposed to grow. Sometimes on your journey you outgrow practices, you outgrow places, you outgrow people, you outgrow relationships, and you should outgrow PRICES!!!!!

And guess what, that’s ok. You’re constantly growing and evolving, so should your service menu, your client experience and your prices!!!!

As an entrepreneur you took the time to learn new skills. You invested financially into your business. You dedicated time, blood, sweat and tears.....

You deserve to be compensated if you have elevated. You owe it to your self!

Does it say look at me? I’m a star. I own a room when I walk in and I know it. I deserve this adoration...

Does it say I’m scared of makeup and I’m scared of attention... I’m more reserved so I purposely choose the nudest nude gloss and I wiped off some of my blush.

Before I was a makeup artist I went to Art School and majored in Fashion. Later I worked as a Service and Training Manager for Gap Inc...

One day Gap Inc changed their company motto to discover your passion do what you love. When I read those words my life changed.

In that moment I realized that I wasn’t doing what I loved. After investing seven years in a great company I decided that it was time to invest in myself and do what I love.

✨ My Creative Process....

Before I got to this shoot, the photographer had already sent a mood board. So I knew the direction my makeup application would be going in.... but then I arrived and saw the model.... she was stunning.

Now if you know me, you know there is nothing I love and respect more than a black woman (surprise surprise because I’m a five star gay lol) #justiceforbreonnataylor

As she sat there in front of me I saw her melanin, her cowrie shell adorned locks, her waist beads, and Egyptian jewelry. I was instantly inspired looking at the Ankh around her neck. It is after all the symbol of life, no wonder why I was inspired.

I instantly got Isis vibes.... So now I have to take creative liberty as the MUA and change the whole direction of the beauty for the shoot. I didn’t want to pile makeup on her because I wasn’t trying to cover anything up. My goal was to make her internal beauty shine through. My job was to bring her inner goddess out and show it to the world. I think I accomplished that... what do you think?
