Our latest article by Ebrima Jobarteh (@ib.ra.heem) on the Eastern Echo (@easternechoofficial) sheds light on systematic racism in healthcare, and how public health is ameliorating the situation.

Racism has plagued health care for long periods. Public health recognizes health disparities which mostly affects racial minorities. Efforts in providing health equity for all segments of the population, culturally competent health care services, and policies that realign health care programs to cater for racial minorities (e.g. Medicaid, Affordable Care Act, and REACH) have significantly reduced the disparity gap.

Public health advocates should continue efforts to ensure that the gap shortens, and preventable and chronic disease burden lessons amongst racial minorities.

Last week, the Office of Health Promotion @emu_ohp set up a booth at the @emu_recim RECWELL Fest. The event promoted healthy behaviors by connecting with students through workshops, expos, guided workouts, and campus resources.

OHP provided students with information and resources on sexual misconduct, cannabis, menstrual care, and OHP - labelled bottle swags.

Michigan winter is clocking in 🥶❄️ — and this year might hit harder than usual.

Our recent article by @ib.ra.heem on the @easternechoofficial sheds light on this season's expectant outcomes and why college students must prepare for the harsh conditions that might emerge.

Forecasters are warning of a colder, wetter second half of winter, linked to the return of La Niña, which often brings harsher conditions to southern Michigan. If this past weekend's cold winds and heavy snows are anything to go by, we certainly have to be prepared.

After a summer of record-breaking heat, drought, and heat-related emergencies, we’re now swinging to the other extreme.

Cold weather isn’t just uncomfortable — it can be dangerous. Risks like hypothermia, frostbite, and respiratory illnesses (including the flu) rise as temperatures drop.

If you’re a college student braving the season:

🧥 Dress in warm, layered clothing
🏠 Keep indoor temperatures comfortable
🚫 Limit outdoor active in severe cold
🚗 Avoid driving in heavy snow when possible
💉 Take the flu shot

Winter is coming either way — staying prepared is how we stay safe.

Sexual harassment is a major concern in the society. College campuses are no exceptions. Every student deserves a peaceful environment to learn and thrive. It is important that we recognize what entails sexual harassment, how we can report the issue to the relevant authorities, and protect the safety of the survivor.

Contact the Title IX office if you are or know someone going through sexual harassment.
