Edit, 10/13/2025: RIP Miss Major and Thank You 🙌💜🙏

11/11/2024. Grateful to have gotten the chance to listen in person to the legendary Miss Major @missmajor1 ,who talked about her life, her activism, and her new book “Miss Major Speaks: Conversations with a Black Trans Revolutionary.” I felt inspired and later a bit emotional, esp. given the recent election and what the trans community may have to face.

"[Take care of yourself,  trans folks. Then, stand for everyone else.]"

Transgender Awareness Week
is November 13-19.

...
Note: I know the song "To Build a Home" has a sense of loss, and I've been thinking about that with regard to various things lately, in the sense of letting go, but rebuilding. So I chose the more positive parts of the song.
...
https://missmajor.net/
"Miss Major is a Black, transgender activist who has fought for over fifty years for her trans/gender nonconforming community.

Major is a veteran of the infamous Stonewall Riots, a former sex worker, and a survivor of Dannemora Prison and Bellevue Hospital’s “queen tank.” Her global legacy of activism is rooted in her own experiences, and she continues her work to uplift transgender women of color, particularly those who have survived incarceration and police brutality."

Felt cute. Might delete later...

I SCAR DARK

I scar dark.
A double incision dark.
From the right angle
It gives an illusion
That one's pecs are built up
More than they can push
an entire weight.
More than their arms can lift overhead.

I went through menopause, you know, so I know how it feels when blood
Gushes out,
The sharp stabs,
And how inconvenient it is to use a tampon or a pad
When you have no intention to give birth.

Then waiting the 12 months,
While the sweat sops your skin,
And the hot flashes burn,
And the spots

Till it stops.

And you're done.

...

NOTE:
Been busy the past several months and haven't spent much time working on my documentary poems or other writing. I also needed to jump start my creativity for a new project that has an actual deadline. So decided to do this "quickie" that is partly an exercise in not striving for "perfection."

🌎 JCPOFEST | MISSION

CLIMATE JUSTICE

JCPOFEST cultivates community while focusing on the effects of human activity on the natural world. The festival creates a space for free expression and dialogue on global issues such as climate justice, climate change, its effects, and sustainability.

As modern poets serve as witnesses to these challenges, we seek out works that highlight urgent social and ecological issues while advocating for preservation and conservation efforts.

The second annual Jersey City Poetry Festival (JCPOFEST) created a magical environment for the community to come together and share a powerful, moving artistic experience.

On Saturday evening at the Monira Foundation at MANA Contemporary, multidisciplinary artists came together across visual art, music, dance, film, and poetry, creating an immersive celebration of creative expression.

This intergenerational and interdisciplinary festival proudly explores the SYNERGY between language arts, science, philosophy, technology, and all forms of artistic expression.

🌌JCPOFEST Founder / Visionary / Interdisciplinary Curator:
Melida Rodas, Jersey City Poet Laureate

@melidarodaspoet created a true temple for poetry, using light design and projection mapping to transform the space into an immersive visual experience.

🎬 JCPOFEST Producer / Panel Curator / Monira Cinema JCPOFEST Film Curator: @ibpen
Patrick / I. Buenaventura

🎶 Sound Technician / Music Producer:
@lefiddler_entertainment
Le Fiddler Entertainment

JCPOFEST continues to create a space where generations, disciplines, ideas, and artistic languages intersect — reminding us of the extraordinary possibilities that emerge when creative communities come together.

Art. Poetry. Film. Music. Dance. Science. Technology. Philosophy. SYNERGY.
