Anelise Chen held an amazing discussion on her writing process for her novel So Many Olympic Exertions at our second DVW of the semester! Not only did she give insight into her discovery of form, but she also explained much of the research that went into her writing and the importance it held for her book. Anelise’s presentation led to a short reading of an excerpt from her novel as well as a wonderful Q&A lead by our students! We look forward to seeing everyone at our final DVW for poetry! by @ic_writingdept

Our second author in the Visiting Writers Series is coming to IC! Join the Department of Writing for a student-organized reading and Q&A of Anelise Chen’s debut novel, So Many Olympic Exertions. Chen was a finalist for the 2026 Pulitzer Prize in Memoir or Autobiography for her most recent book Clam Down: A Metamorphosis. Meet Chen in her visit to IC on Tuesday, October 13th, at 6 PM in Klingenstein Lounge.

“We have a very narrow understanding of success and failure, as though they were absolute states. Consider the price one pays for victory: hours of pain and sacrifice and self-denial. When you consider all these factors, a victory isn’t really a victory.”
