Full house at yesterday’s Experience Ithaca admitted student event. Thank you to all who attended and all who made this possible. In H&S, we had 20+ faculty across 6 building, and saw over 300 attendees. A big shout to Te-Wen Lo (Biology), Raul Palma (Writing & HSDean), Emily Eichinger (Biology + Psychology major), and Bailey Bramer (Writing major and art minor). They led an engaging panel on community and collaboration.

Grateful to the editors at The Cincinnati Review for including my craft essay “The Uncanny as Worldlessness” in their latest issue, as part of a horror folio that touches on themes in the issue.

I’ve posted a link to the issue in my bio. This was a fun piece that gave me an opportunity to revisit some experiences in Chicago, Key West, and Miami—particularly the old abandoned bomb shelter.

This year marks the 25-year anniversary of the Bachelor of Arts in Writing at Ithaca College. The department that houses the degree, however, has a history that dates back 53 years.

Our students have participated in a wide array of projects. Examples include students in architectural studies who sought to increase positive engagement in Ithaca City parks, and students in the environmental sciences who sought to develop better ways to quantify methane emissions from local farms to fill the gaps between data that is reported and the field measures that students take.

In addition to participating in a robust research program, H&S Summer Scholars are also invited to check-in as a cohort weekly and prepare a final presentation which is shared at the Summer Scholars Symposium, an exciting summer event that is free and open to the general public.

Your generous gift to the H&S Scholars Program goes directly to the students. It’s an investment in their curiosity, research, creativity, and ambition. For many students, the opportunity to be an H&S Summer Scholar had a direct impact on their professional success after graduation.

Students in H&S pursue internships and venture into the field to learn from alumni who have established themselves in the industry. In the Department of Writing, future editors and publishers visiting major publishing houses and literary agents. Experiences like this are critical in the trajectory of our students.

Faculty mentorship—or, to put it differently, faculty devotion to student learning—is the beating heart of H&S. Our goal is to empower students to pursue learning that happens outside of the classroom through internships, community engagement, and meaningful participation in professional associations and conferences. Our students work hard to prepare for these opportunities, and our goal is to ensure that we can support them fully and robustly so that they can gain the skills and experience that they’ll need to make an impact in their areas.

Your generous gift towards our annual fund makes a big difference to our students and our ability to support them when they engage in hands-on learning outside of the classroom..

H&S belongs to and serves the greater community. Your gift to the IC Annual Fund for Humanities & Sciences is instrumental in helping us empower students to integrate their learning in “real-world” contexts—through concrete activities, such as, conference travel, access to professional development, H&S Summer Scholars, and much much more.
