Stepping into the rhythm of the Cariñosa with a touch of Kalachuchi (Plumeria) blossoms. 🌸✨

Did you know that in the Cariñosa, the fan and handkerchief aren’t just accessories? They are tools of “loving affection”—the literal translation of the dance’s name. Much like the Kalachuchi, which symbolizes grace and new beginnings in many cultures, this dance represents the delicate start of a traditional courtship. While we often see Kalachuchi in white and yellow, it’s a resilient survivor that can grow even after being uprooted.

This collection serves as a visual tribute to the Maria Clara era, celebrating the “loving affection” that defines Filipino identity. A scent as sweet as a secret shared behind a fan. 🤫🌼 Featuring the golden Champaka (Magnolia champaca).

The Cariñosa is famous for the “hide-and-seek” movement, where dancers peek at each other from behind fans or handkerchiefs. It’s a game of allure, much like the Champaka’s heady, intoxicating fragrance that lingers long after you’ve passed the tree. Champaka oil is so fragrant it’s a primary ingredient in some of the world’s most expensive perfumes.

Bold, bright, and full of life—just like a Filipina’s smile. 🌺💃 The Gumamela (Hibiscus) takes center stage.

The Cariñosa is all about the eyes! Dancers must maintain expressive eye contact to convey shy fascination. The vibrant Gumamela reflects that festive, youthful energy often seen in the colorful Maria Clara gowns worn during the performance. In the Philippines, children traditionally use the sap from crushed Gumamela petals and leaves to create bubbles for play.

The Queen of Philippine Orchids meets the dance of Filipino courtship. Presenting the Waling-waling (Vanda sanderiana). 👑💜

While the Cariñosa was introduced by Spaniards, Filipinos made it their own by adding local steps and a unique, modest charm. It is the “Queen” of our folk dances, making the Waling-waling—the “Queen of Philippine Orchids”—its perfect floral partner. The Waling-waling is endemic to Mindanao and was once worshipped as a diwata (fairy) by the native Bagobo people.

“𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐦 𝐨𝐟 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: 𝐀 𝐓𝐚𝐩𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐃𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐦𝐬” is an exploration of the inner worlds that shape how we see, feel, and imagine. This exhibition brings together artists who translate fleeting thoughts, emotions, and subconscious visions into works that exist between clarity and ambiguity.

Each work reflects a moment of inspiration in motion, revealing how opposing forces – hope and doubt, certainty and wonder, stillness and movement – coexist to shape creative expression, woven together into a visual language that speaks beyond words.

Across mediums and genres, the collection reveals inspiration as a living force, shaped by both the visible and the unseen. Dreams emerge not as escape, but as reflection – echoes of reality transformed through creative intuition.

Part 2: Hello 2026! Greeting the new year with a piece inspired by the marine life in Puerto Galera. It is home to the pygmy seahorse, cephalopods, frogfish, sea turtles and thresher sharks to name a few. This piece will be displayed in Casalay.ph @casalayresort. The beautiful boutique resort is a place for wellness and world-class diving. Glad to be part of this hidden sanctuary by the sea.
