ISSUE 7 | Out Now

At Icarus Complex, we’re leaning ever more deeply into the systemic roots of the climate crisis — examining how fossil fuel power is upheld through law, finance and political influence.

Issue 7 unpacks Investor–State Dispute Settlements, SLAPP lawsuits, distorted ideas of ‘economic feasibility’, and the cultural narratives that normalise extraction. Through essays, interviews, poetry and photo stories, the issue traces how these systems shape land, livelihoods and resistance.

🗞️ Print + digital available now via the link in bio

💬 Where do you see fossil power most entrenched?

MAURITANIA'S FISHING SECTOR | A Cornerstone of Sahelian Security

Along Mauritania's Atlantic coast, the fishing sector is far more than an economic lifeline. It supports livelihoods, strengthens food security, and plays a vital role in stability across the Sahel. Yet the communities who depend on the ocean are increasingly navigating the pressures of climate change, shifting fish stocks, and industrial fishing.

Kang-Chun Cheng (@takeme.north) documents the people whose lives are shaped by the sea, exploring the connections between ocean health, livelihoods, and regional security. Ely Cheikh Mohamed Vadel contributed reporting to this project.

EARTH ELDERS: Protecting the World’s Sacred Sites

A film made by Indigenous elders, on their own terms.

The Earth Elders are a global Indigenous-led movement protecting sacred sites from extraction, exploitation and destruction. Their film (@eartheldersfilm) is co-owned and co-directed by the communities themselves, challenging extractive approaches to storytelling and centring Indigenous voices, knowledge and consent.

At a time when climate and energy transition plans increasingly rely on Indigenous territories but rarely on Indigenous leadership, Earth Elders offers a different perspective on our relationship with the living world. In this conversation, Earth Elder Mindahi Bastida (@mindahibastida) and filmmaker Lucy Martens (@lucynlmartens) speak about ancestral knowledge, reciprocity and the collective responsibility to protect sacred sites and restore dignity.

GIRLS, LAND + POWER | Who gets to access, use and decide about land?

Land rights shape who can make decisions about natural resources, livelihoods and the future of their communities.

For girls growing up in rural communities, learning about land rights and having opportunities to participate can influence their choices and their role in local decision-making.

From land-rights education in West Bengal to women restoring degraded land in Kenya and building agricultural livelihoods in Senegal, these initiatives show why rights, knowledge, participation and access to resources matter together.

In Nepal, the National Indigenous Women Forum supports Indigenous women and girls as climate leaders through climate-resilient farming, education and intergenerational knowledge-sharing.

Women’s leadership also contributes to restoration. TreeSisters reports an 89% tree survival rate across its supported projects, well above the average, with women and girls making up 80% of project leaders and beneficiaries last year.

Investing in girls’ rights means expanding their ability to learn, participate and shape their futures.

ARTICLE | Mumbai’s Coastal Road: Boon or Bane?

Completed in 2024 at a cost of $1.47 billion, Mumbai’s Coastal Road was presented as a solution to congestion in one of the world’s fastest-growing cities. But who does it actually serve?

The road is accessible primarily to the roughly 5% of Mumbai’s residents who own cars, while its construction involved clearing mangroves and displacing fishing communities. What does this tell us about who urban infrastructure is built for, and whose needs are left out?

THE IDEAL AI RULEBOOK

Artificial intelligence (AI) is often discussed in terms of what it can do, but much less attention is given to what it takes to run.

Training and running AI models requires electricity, while the data centres behind them also need energy and, in many cases, water for cooling.

Data centres accounted for around 1.5% of global electricity consumption in 2024. The International Energy Agency (IEA) projects this could more than double by 2030, with AI the most important driver of this growth alongside other digital services.

The European Union (EU) is beginning to address this infrastructure. Providers of general-purpose AI models must document their energy consumption under the European Union Artificial Intelligence Act (EU AI Act), while significant data centres already have reporting requirements covering energy performance and water footprint.

In September 2026, the European Commission also adopted a data-centre energy-efficiency package including a common rating scheme and work towards minimum performance standards.

But measuring consumption is only a starting point.

What could AI regulation look like if energy, water, infrastructure and efficiency were treated as part of the system, rather than as an afterthought? 💬

PHOTO STORY | Ukraine’s Anti-Drone Defence

Five years into the war, Ukraine’s survival now depends in part on how well it can outsmart drones in the sky.

Photographer Kang-Chun Cheng travelled to Sloviansk, a critical flashpoint on the eastern front and a key military stronghold. There, she met three female soldiers from the 3rd Battalion, 60th Brigade: an electronic warfare specialist, a drone pilot and a new recruit.

Their stories reveal another side of a war that has become a constant race between technology and survival, in a country still fighting for the world’s attention.

ARTICLE | The War After the War: Gaza’s Environmental & Human Catastrophe

The end of bombing does not mean the end of a catastrophe.

Since the ceasefire declared in October 2025, Gaza’s collapsed water and sanitation systems have continued to shape daily life, contributing to disease outbreaks, disability and ongoing public health risks.

Journalist Haya Abushkhaidem speaks with residents and healthcare workers about what comes after the destruction, and the environmental and human consequences that remain when the immediate violence subsides.

Wildland flames carry the sensation of heat into another dimension.

One day I am standing a dozen or so feet away from a thicket of chaparral at the moment it explodes into a crackling, 15-foot-tall plume of flame. The radiant heat sears my cheeks to the point where my skin feels ready to peel off.

I keep my Nikon right in front of my face as a heat shield, and keep shooting the dancing dragon until the brutal scorching of my hands drives me away.

A 15-foot flame is ordinary, though. Much, much bigger ones are a normal part of the game: 25 to 50 feet? Common. 100 feet? Frequent. 200 feet? Possible.
