Film Club Lagos was really about the people as much as the films.

It was great to see filmmakers, creatives and industry professionals in the same room, watching, talking, exchanging ideas and making new connections.

These are the kinds of spaces Film Lab Africa continues to create, relaxed, open and inclusive, where people can meet, learn from each other and feel part of a wider film community.

A big thank you to everyone who came out to support, share in the experience and be part of the community. Your presence made the evening even more special.

Please scroll to see a few moments from a lovely evening of film, conversation and connection.

What happens when you create a genre with your own rules?

For Moses Ipadeola, ‘Ekún Ìyàwó’: The Tale of a Runaway Bride’ is “trado-fiction”; a genre he created to give himself the freedom to experiment and make the kind of films he wants to make.

As the film’s writer, producer and director, Moses tells us what the genre means to him.

The title screened alongside five other Nigerian and UK short films at Film Club, held at the AGIP Hall Muson Centre in Lagos.

As part of Film Lab Africa 2, Film Club Lagos brought together filmmakers, film lovers, creatives and students to watch six short films from Nigeria and the UK last week to screen films and have meaningful conversations post screening.

The six-film selection were as follows;

Ekún Ìyàwó: A Tale of a Runaway Bride — Moses Ipadeola
Obi Is a Boy — Dika Ofoma
Mr. Bold — Aiman Mimiko
Boy Meets Girl — Kaelo Iyizoba
Dream Car Wash — Edoardo Brighenti
Hussaini — Orire Nwani

These films explored common themes such as tradition and identity , family, ambition and belonging.

Film Club Lagos is brought to you by the British Council, in partnership with EbonyLife Creative Academy and Iconic Steps UK.

Film Lab Africa is not only about developing filmmakers, it is also about strengthening the ecosystem around them.

Creative Hustle in Kano brought together filmmakers, creatives and industry professionals for conversations around opportunity, collaboration, growth and the realities of working within the screen industries, with Kannywood at the centre of the discussion.

The result was a day of honest exchange, meaningful connections and a stronger sense of community.

Here are a few moments from Kano.

Meet Etta JoMaria.

One of the seven producers selected for Film Lab Africa Phase 2, Etta is an international storyteller, award-winning Nigerian actor and film producer.

For Etta, the Film Lab experience has been eye-opening in more ways than one. While producing her project presented a number of challenges, it also pushed her to adapt, improvise and find new creative solutions along the way.

Her biggest takeaway? Setbacks can create room for comebacks.

She is grateful for the opportunity to produce the story and for the lessons that came with the process.

Film Lab Africa 2 is the British Council’s flagship film and television accelerator programme, delivered in partnership with EbonyLife Creative Academy and Iconic Steps.
