Achieving equity and justice for immigrants and refugees since 1978.
📍Offices in Portland and Hood River, Oregon
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Like many of you, my grandparents immigrated to America in search of a more meaningful and prosperous life. Despite a myriad of challenges, they were resilient, tough and resourceful, which resulted in a better life for themselves but perhaps even more impactful for their offspring – my father in particular, who went on to contribute his energies towards creating industries that helped to build a stronger economy for our state, and opened opportunities for others to prosper.

This is what America has always represented to me; a place where all people have the ability to seek independence, forge their own paths and pursue their dreams for the betterment of others - it’s the American spirit.

But in the last few years, a different perspective is in motion. The current administration is making every effort to prevent this spirit from thriving. Today, under this administration, more than 100,000 children—many of them U.S. citizens—have been separated from a parent due to detention or deportation since 2025.

And effective today, funding that was promised to non-profit organizations that represent unaccompanied minors on a path towards legal citizenship is frozen.

I recently joined the board of ICS (Immigration Counseling Services) which currently serves 175 unaccompanied minors in Oregon, some under 6 years old. Without the critical funding of nearly $640,00 that was promised to @ics_pdx , these children will be left unrepresented, leaving them in dangerous conditions, without any support. Thank you if you can help during this desperate time. by @ics_pdx

🚨 ICE is making it even harder for immigrants to seek release from detention.
Before, many people could ask a judge for bond by showing they were not a danger or flight risk. Now, ICE is attempting to deny that right altogether ❌

🤔 Who can approve an immigration bond? There are two key decision-makers:
✅ An ICE officer may set a bond or even release someone without requiring payment ⚖️
✅ An Immigration Judge can review the case and decide whether to grant bond if ICE does not release someone 🏛️

💡 What is an immigration bond? An immigration bond allows someone to leave detention while their case moves forward.
✅ The government holds the payment
✅ You must attend all hearings & follow court orders
✅ The money should be returned if you comply

🚨 Immigrant detention is rising sharply, with more people being arrested and held while their cases move forward. Under the law, officers generally have three options after an arrest:
• Keep someone in detention 🔒
• Release them on immigration bond (if eligible) ⚖️
• Release them on parole 🕊️

🤝⚖️ These policy changes are complex and evolving, but you don’t have to navigate them alone. If you may be affected, connect with a qualified immigration attorney or a trusted provider like ICS for guidance.

💭The new green card policy has created confusion and uncertainty across the immigration system, with legal experts working to understand how it will be applied.
For many immigrants, the choice may be difficult:
➡️ Stay in the U.S. with uncertain status
➡️ Or leave to pursue a green card—with no guarantee of return ✈️💔

⚠️Over the last decade, most green cards were issued to people already living in the U.S. This new policy marks a major shift that could lead to long separations, uncertainty, and longer wait times for families navigating the process ⏳

🌍Under new guidance, applying for a green card from within the U.S. is no longer viewed as routine. Many applicants may be expected to leave the U.S. and apply from abroad, even if they live and work here ✈️💼

🧾Did you know? For decades, many immigrants have relied on “adjustment of status” to apply for a green card without leaving the U.S. ✨
This process has allowed families to stay together while building their future here. ❤️

A May 2026 USCIS memo introduces a stricter interpretation of when people can apply for a green card while remaining in the U.S. and treats it as a discretionary, “extraordinary” process rather than a routine one.
