Back in 2008 I read an article in Climbing magazine called, “The Contrarian”. It was about Brian McCray. Also known as Fly’n Brian for his speed ascents. I had always sent my climbing shoes to him to resole. He was a master of detail.

One time I sent some questions to him with a pair of shoes to resole. Honestly I was intimidated by him a little as he was a certified badass hard climber that did things the way he wanted to. No compromise. Hence the Climbing magazine article name.

To my surprise he turned out to be just as much of a badass human being. He answered my questions and would include hand written notes with my shoes. I never got to meet him but he had an impact on me. It made me want to seek out the Contrarians and see how they navigated a world of conformity. The origin of the podcast.

Sadly, Fly’n Brian also had control over his own destiny and left us 11 years ago. It’s also worth noting that this picture is from Ammon McNeely. Another one gone too soon.

@glenplake and @ms.snowplake do a Down Home Tour every year where they visit ski areas that are smaller, independent and pretty much crank out the next generations of Soul Skiers.

I grew up in Fairfield and my home mountain is @soldiermountain . It was my Fortress of Solitude. As an only child with a sometimes difficult home life, it was a huge relief when we got enough snow to open!

I’m only 7 years younger than Glen so he was a big influence in my development as a skier. This is during the heyday of “$200 Fine for Skis Leaving the Snow”. I jumped off EVERYTHING. I was dead-broke growing up so I’m glad I never had to pay a fine! I hitchhiked to Soldier, worked for Claude for passes and skied on skis from the Goldmine thrift store in Sun Valley.

This past week, I traveled to Soldier and met up with Glen and Kimberly at the top of chair 2. We took a few laps and I showed him the awesome terrain of Soldier’s backside. Soldier wanted to show Glen the backcountry using the side by side with tracks. Kimberly suggested that I go in her place.

We took two laps using the sniper cat (as Glen called it!). We were told that conditions were variable, but what we skied was superb. Chasing Glen down my cherished mountains still seems surreal.

The conversations we had and stories told are still going through my head. I told Ptor Spricenieks about skiing with Glen and he said some of his best big mountain days have been with Glen and said he was his hero. I can confirm that that day at Soldier was one of my best days on skis and Glen is truly a hero of the skiing community.

I sit down with Ras Fyah chilling in his yard in Jamaica and talk about his latest project of transforming four acres of land into a sustainable farm. Farming = Happiness! He’s getting help along the way from his neighbor, ⁠Ras Mokko⁠ and family but he’s inviting YOU to come down and work the farm in exchange for a place to stay and positive vibrations! After a LONG dry spell of no episodes I sat down with Corey McDonald, he is a soul rider and is a masterful creator of terrain parks. We start off talking about the history of snowboarding at Bogus Basin Ski Area (Idaho) and his introduction to the practice and art. The most impactful part is listening to the creation of the Carson David lanson Memorial (CDI). This is an event that is part memorial for his best friend, snowboard contest and is 100% DIY and soul.
So enjoy this episode, ramp up your stoke and be comforted in the fact that we only have about three months until we’re riding!

New podcast episode (link in bio)! I met Spencer years ago on an Avalanche education course in the Sawtooths of Idaho. He had so much energy and stoke that it was impossible to have a bad day with him! He continues his life of stoke and has turned his vision and positivity to the political realm. I don't usually get into politics but when you have a place you grew up in and love, it's hard to sit by while things start to change in a way that's not good for your home. Enter Spencer Cordovano, your next Ketchum City Councilmember.
