I’m starting to notice I have a thing for stormy seas. Though truthfully, it’s rarely me choosing the backdrop. More often than not, the photo picks it, and I’m just as surprised as anyone when I finally see what’s waiting behind her.

These two are best friends and came in as exactly that — there was just something about the combination of the two of them, both artists, both with something to say, that made the mood easy and loose from the start in a way I hadn’t quite anticipated. What happened between them in front of the camera was uninhibited and sensual and entirely on their own terms, and my job at some point became less about directing and more about not getting in the way of something that clearly didn’t need me.

Working within the female gaze is a different experience altogether — there’s less explaining, less negotiating, and something that moves faster toward what it actually wants to be.

The background, in case anyone was wondering, is Lucas Cranach the Elder, Adam and Eve (c.1510) I made some adjustments to the original cast. Cranach would almost certainly have had opinions about this. I’ve decided those opinions are not relevant to the conversation.
