Frame building with my chop saw, router, and old weathered grapestakes. I like the appropriately scruffy result. The vintage Morro Bay paintings are both by artist Eben Given from long ago. by @ideafarm

I’m mourning the loss of so many Southern California beaches to hurricane wave erosion this week. Dozens of city councils are saying they will buy replacement sand… but from where… and isn’t that just an ephemeral solution? Photo is circa 1936 by Edward Weston when he was visiting the little California “Dunite” colony of artists, intellectuals, spiritual seekers, and writers… known as Moy Mel. by @ideafarm

Greg Evans @paintyourapt designed the iconic Vision Street Wear logo… here are his reflections from a few months ago to me about that day. We filed it with the US Patent and trademark office in May of 1986 and used the TM when first using it. It was approved and registered by the USPTO as trademark registration number 1506002 sept. 28 1988 and we then switched to using the circle r on it. You can date early VSW items via the tm vs the later circle r on the logo. Note my two business cards… one a tm at the 17th st. address… and the other a circle R at the south Lyon street address. #streetwear #visionstreetwear #ericmeyer (reposted due to lousy IG crop on one of the photos) by @ideafarm

Our 50 year Vision retrospective is currently hanging at HVW8 gallery in Los Angeles. I love this shot of Vision artist Gregory Bevington @casadesangre aka Psychoman next to a tattoo of himself on a fellow who came to the show. So many greats were at this show last night. Third shot is Pierre Andre (Etnies) and I goofing with Brad Dorfman who started it all. Brad was 29 when he started Vision in 1976. He’s 80 now. It’s amazing that it’s been over 40 years since we the started Vision Street Wear clothing line!! @don_brown and @martyjimenez and @dano_zhang curated the show from the archives for @visionstreetwear #visionstreetwear #streetwear by @ideafarm

Just over forty years ago a small crew of really creative individuals began a brand called Vision Street Wear. We helped birth what is now called skate style. Brad Dorfman owned a skateboard company called Vision Sports that sold skateboards which he had started in 1976. I wrote him a letter in 1985 when I graduated college about the need for a line of clothing aimed at skateboarders. Brad started Vision Street Wear and hired me to be the design director. I was 24. Brad already had a whole slew of artists working at Vision Sports.

And so it began. Greg Evans, John Grigley, Marty Jimenez, Shark, Andy Takakjian, Gregory Bevington, and Tom MacElroy created the first art and graphic designs. Jackie Rosecrans, Luanne Dorfman and Lance Aoyagi created the fabrics and patterns and managed the production. We didn’t know any better so Marty and I designed the shoes too.

We learned along the way. Greg Evans designed the logo. And fyi… my phone number was on the logo art because email didn’t exist yet! If someone in the art department wanted to use the art they had to call me as I was a control freak about the branding! Millions and millions of things were sold under this logo back then… and still are today.

this was the art that started it all… this actual piece of art.
