#TestMeTuesday 🤔 Did you get the word? Column A is atypical coverage theme. We add azithromycin for example to ceftriaxone for atypical coverage, so ceftriaxone is the odd man out there… Group B the theme is gram positive coverage, of which Aztreonam has none. All of those drugs specifically have utility for Staphylococcus aureus… the Group C the theme is Pseudomonas which of course tigecycline does not cover… put the letters together and what do you get? 🐈 Meow! #PharmacySchool #PAschool #Pharmacist #Antibiotics … 🍎and remember to learn antibiotics, use learnantibiotics.com! by @idstewardship

Which organism is NOT a member of the HACEK group? 🦠❤️

The answer is E. Capnocytophaga canimorsus.

HACEK organisms are fastidious Gram-negative bacteria that are part of the oropharyngeal flora and are classically associated with culture-negative infective endocarditis.

Remember HACEK:

H – Haemophilus spp.
A – Aggregatibacter spp. (say the full name correctly if you ever want to impress your preceptor)
C – Cardiobacterium spp.
E – Eikenella corrodens
K – Kingella spp.

🐶 Capnocytophaga canimorsus is not a HACEK organism. It is part of the normal oral flora of dogs and cats and is associated with infections following dog bites, scratches, or saliva exposure.

📸 You can’t deny the wonderful pair vancomycin and pip-tazo (Zosyn) come together to make, as some affectionately call it “Vancosyn”. 🤔 Yes we should stop them when we can and avoid them when we can, but sometimes they are indicated and they are quite a 🤠🤠 duo when that’s what the case calls for… ☝️Now I don’t want to glorify #vancomycin here, bc often a different drug can be a better choice when MRSA coverage is needed, but I can’t deny it has a role still after all these years, especially for empiric coverage. #Antibiotics #LearnAntibiotics #Pharmacist #PharmacySchool by @idstewardship
