Idag tittade vi in hos vår granne!

A video installation translated into print. The timecode stays.

@ignacio_acosta ’s Archaeology of Sacrifice examines how the meaning of sacrifice has shifted from sacred ritual to a structural condition of contemporary extractive capitalism. Our task: find a structure for something that was never meant to stand still.

The embossed cover presses a stylised quarry into raw cardboard, a tactile reference to the act of extraction. Inside, conventional pagination gives way to timecodes that situate each image precisely within the film sequence. A change of paper stock separates the image and text sections, with a single spot color reinforcing the distinction.

A precise system for communicating a time-based work in static form.

EARTH MATTER: AN INDEX ON EXTRACTIVISM

@ignacio_acosta @louise.purbrick @xavierribas_

Earth Matter is the culmination of over a decade of collaborative research exploring the global impact of extractivism. Closely tied to the Traces of Nitrate project, this book delves into the history of extractivism in Chile, beginning with the nitrate mines in the Atacama Desert in the nineteenth century and extending to the ongoing extraction of copper, lithium and water today. Through photography, video, archival research and personal interviews, artist-researchers Xavier Ribas and Ignacio Acosta and activist-writer Louise Purbrick examine the interconnected forces that bind Chile’s natural resources to global capital, particularly in the City of London.

This publication offers a critical analysis of how extractivist practices have shaped both historical and contemporary life, while anticipating future forms of exploitation. An index of terms explores past and present facts, documents, sites, projects, politicians, activists, NGOs and critical writings to form a Benjaminian constellation that readers can connect and decipher at their own pace.

LECTURE. On behalf of the students of the research studio series Atacama Desert Project (co-taught with Cristóbal Molina Baeza), I would like to invite you to the lecture “Atacama Desert: A Contested Geography” by @ignacio_acosta.
.
As this semester we are working in the Salado River Valley through a water-first research-to-design arc, Ignacio’s work will offer a powerful lens to read Atacama as a territory shaped by extractive industries, climate pressures, and competing narratives of progress. Grounded in long-term research and fieldwork, his audiovisual practice builds sensorial environments that reveal the ecological and socio-political conflicts embedded in the landscape.
.
The lecture will be held on Wednesday, February 11th at 1:00pm (CST). Please send me a message if you would like to attend.
.
Thank you very much in advance for your time and generosity, Ignacio!

Cambridge. Working with Ignacio Acosta, Louise Purbrick, Xavier Ribas, and Carles Guerra on Earth Matter. An Index on Extractivism. Out in bookstores in Spain today.

Among the materials gathered by Traces of Nitrate is a transcription of a 1972 interview with Salvador Allende: “Salvador Allende Speaks to the American People.” The film was never broadcast in the U.S. Though screened at the 1974 Venice Biennale, it is now lost. Only photocopies of the audio transcript remain—no images.

Yesterday, the right returned to power in Chile.
