Cloning Sanhattan onto Manhattan at the Whitney Biennial while tracing and mirroring distances between the two , trying to understand which double came to be the original reflection.

Sanhattan -the financial district of Santiago, Chile- was built shortly after Augusto Pinochet’s violent, US-backed dictatorship, which lasted from 1973 to 1990.
Intentionally resembling Manhattan, it was intended as an architectural glorification of the free-market ideology espoused by the “Chicago Boys,” a group of economists trained in the United States. The installation combines cityscapes, dreamlike narration, and expert interviews to explore the ways that Sanhattan simulates, shadows, predicts, and resists its namesake.

The 82nd edition of the Biennial opens on 8 March 2026 and is co-organised by curators Marcela Guerrero and Drew Sawyer.

Now online @bombmag 〰️ Conversation with @ignaciogatica on his installation “Sanhattan,” currently on view in the Whitney Biennial.

The film at the center of the installation focuses on Santiago’s financial center, nicknamed Sanhattan. Architecturally and economically modeled after New York’s financial district, Sanhattan was constructed under Pinochet shortly after the US-backed coup in 1973. Weaving between two locales, the film situates Sanhattan culturally, historically, and spatially in relation to other sites of globalist intervention and neoliberal reform.

In our interview, Ignacio and I discuss the film, Juan Downey, feedback loops, and “contemporary spaces of ruin.”

La 82ª Bienal del Whitney, curada por Marcela Guerrero y Drew Sawyer, pone en juego la propia noción de "arte estadounidense". La piensa como una red de vínculos históricos que se extiende por las múltiples Américas, incluidas las regiones marcadas por la ocupación y la influencia política, económica y militar de Estados Unidos. Inside one of the country’s largest contemporary art exhibitions, the @whitneymuseum Biennial, slimy green sculptures stare back at you, the scent of lemongrass fills the air, and the hum of insects surrounds you.

This year, for the first time in the museum’s history, the exhibition is co-curated by a Latina. Marcela Guerrero brings a new perspective to the prestigious show.

🌑 BECA ARTISTAS 2025 | ARTISTS GRANT

Felicitamos al artista Ignacio Gatica [@ignaciogatica] (Chile) por recibir la Beca Fundación Ama Amoedo para producir Sanhattan, una obra en video que propone una reflexión poético-documental sobre el desarrollo del centro financiero de Santiago y su vínculo con la cultura de Wall Street en Nueva York. Filmado entre ambas ciudades, el proyecto indaga cómo la doctrina económica impuesta en Chile por los Chicago Boys desde fines de los años 70, repercute en la sociedad actual globalizada. La obra se exhibirá como instalación de gran formato en Nueva York en 2026.

Congratulations to artist Ignacio Gatica (Chile) for receiving the Fundación Ama Amoedo Grant. He will use the Grant to produce Sanhattan, a video work that offers a poetic-documentary reflection on the development of Santiago’s financial centre and its link to Wall Street culture in New York. Filmed in both cities, the project explores how the economic doctrine imposed on Chile by the Chicago Boys since the late 1970s has impacted today’s globalised society. The work will be exhibited as a large-format installation in New York in 2026.
