‘From Eclipse to Venus’s Girdle’
A timelapse of last week’s Lunar Eclipse as seen from the Mackenzie Basin in New Zealand. Shot on the very early morning of the 8th of September.
The day before I scouted the area for a good spot to see the eclipsed moon set, and I found one on top of the canyon wall of the Tekapo River. After a very short sleep, an extremely early rise 😣, and a middle of the night 4wd trip up the canyon wall, I was good to go… It was beautiful, not a cloud in the sky, and a perfect view on the celestial event. After the eclipsed moon had disappeared behind the mountains I decided to continue the timelapse to capture more of the dawn, after all I had never shot a timelapse of a sunrise while facing the opposite direction of where the sun is. It very nicely captured the Venus’s Girdle (aka Belt of Venus), a pinkish glow that appears when the first rays of the rising sun start illuminating Earth’s atmosphere. You can see how the pink glow slowly moves down the atmosphere until it touches the mountains, and the day has started 😊

A night on Mt Hay
November last year I decided to camp on Mt Hay for one night with a specific idea of a night sky timelapse that I wanted to shoot facing northwest. But by the time it got dark the wind had picked up and the weather completely changed. I had to cancel my initial idea, and ended up shooting a timelapse southwest towards the township of Tekapo.
The view was amazing, and despite the cold windy weather I had an awesome night and slept very well in that small tent 😄

‘Midnight Fata Morgana’
This is the third and last part of a trilogy about my favourite spot on the west shore of Lake Tekapo near the Peninsula Bay. I love this place, it’s remote, still reasonably accessible, and completely free of any artificial light pollution. A perfect spot to watch our magical Milky Way galaxy rise above Lake Tekapo and the Two Thumb mountain range.
This night was the night I have been waiting for… The lake was completely still and had turned into a perfect mirror reflecting the wonders of our night sky ✨

‘Dancing Motuariki’
This is the second part of a trilogy about my favourite spot on the west shore of Lake Tekapo near the Peninsula Bay. I love this place, it’s remote, still reasonably accessible, and completely free of any artificial light pollution. A perfect spot to watch our magical Milky Way galaxy rise above Lake Tekapo and the Two Thumb mountain range.
This night I felt completely lost, Tekapo was covered in a thick layer of fog, and so was my mind. I decided to go for a drive into this misty world, and I ended up at my favourite spot on the lakeside of Lake Tekapo. Soon after I arrived, the mist started to clear, and that is when I met the dancing Motuariki…
Motuariki Island is a for Maori sacred island located in the middle of Lake Tekapo. What I like about this island is that it’s the only place in the Mackenzie Basin that is fully covered in pine trees, and so far has been unreachable for the Kiwi chainsaw 😁

This timelapse was shot over a period of 6 hours, and shows how the atmosphere completely changes in colour due to airglow.

The bright aurora night of the 12th of August. My previous post was the peak of the aurora that night, and was shot just after midnight on the 13th. This timelapse shows you the start of that night. It shows the first 3.5 hours of the aurora in 100 seconds, and it starts just after sunset, in the twilight zone 😄

‘Under the Milky Way’
Today it’s exactly 10 years ago that I set foot on New Zealand soil 😄 With nothing more than a backpack and a snowboard. As a little boy I loved browsing this big atlas we had at home. It had all these amazing maps of far away countries, and I could spend hours dreaming about them. And my favourite game to play was: ‘where would I like to live?’. For some reason I always ended up in New Zealand. Many decades later, in 2014, I decided to go and have a look. I took 3 months of unpaid leave from my job, and with no other plan than my childhood dream, I finally arrived in this far away magical mystery country 💭🇳🇿
The only thing I knew that it was winter there during our summer months, and it had mountains!😃 So the first couple of weeks I had something to lead me by🏂 But other than that, to be honest, I was lost… What the **** am I doing here?!🤔
That completely changed the moment I found myself under the Milky Way on the edge of a little town called Tekapo, in the middle of a dark sky reserve. Here I was reunited with my 2 old long forgotten passions: photography and the night sky ☺️ Ten years later I am still here, and in June this year I finally got my permanent residency 😁
This timelapse is a tribute to that adventure and what it has brought me. I shot this on three different nights at my favourite spot a long side the west shore of Lake Tekapo. This spot is so remote that the only light you can see is starlight ✨😍
