📍 Mt John Observatory

“This has been my work place for almost six years. Providing astrophotography for our stargazing customers. An amazing job on an amazing spot!😊 I took this timelapse while Mt John was closed for stargazing tours, a very quiet and clear night with a lot of airglow and a shining Milky Way. The large dome holds New Zealand’s largest telescope, the MOA II telescope. The smaller dome in the background is the Bateson dome, that one is used for stargazing tours”

Matariki (the Pleiades) is an open cluster of young stars in the constellation Taurus. They feature in many stories and traditions around the world and here they signal the new year in the Māori lunar calendar. The appearance of Matariki heralds a time of remembrance, joy and peace. It is a time for reflection and renewal to honour the past and embrace the future with friends and whanau.

If you’re wondering how you can find Matariki in the sky, a couple of hours before Sunrise, take a look towards the northeast from somewhere with a clear horizon. Find Tautoru that forms the three bright stars which form the base of The Pot, or Orion’s Belt, the constellation of Taurus. These stars are some of the brightest in the night sky. Follow Tautoru in a straight line along the horizon toward the left. Look for a triangle of stars. This is Te Kōkota, Mata Kaheru, or Hyades (the face of Taurus the bull).

Look further to the left and you will see the small group of clustered stars. This is Matariki. This great timelapse taken by our resident astronomer @igorhoogerwerf
